Our team had developed a technique to provide oxygen off the electrical grid in remote and rural areas, testing the process at 25 hospitals in Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Somalia. This presentation will discuss the proof-of-concept, efficacy (mortality benefit), and cost-effectiveness of solar powered oxygen delivery. We will also speculate on pathways to scale to maximize global impact.

Dr. Michael Hawkes, (BEng, McGill U; MD, U of Alberta; PhD, U of Toronto; DTM&H, Peru; FRCPC, Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases; Distinguished Researcher, Stollery Science Lab) is a clinician-scientist at the University of Alberta. In addition to a clinical practice in consultant Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, he leads a translational research program in global pediatric infections. Diseases of focus include some of the leading infectious disease killers of children in the world today: malaria, pneumonia, Ebola, and HIV. He holds peer reviewed grants (CIHR, Grand Challenges Canada, Women and Children’s Health Research Institute, Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology) that support basic science research, epidemiologic studies, and clinical trials. He operates field sites in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has more than 120 peer-reviewed publications, which have been cited over 3,300 times in the medical literature. His research is improving outcomes in children with serious infections in some of the least developed areas of the globe.

Dr. Nicholas Conradi, BSc, MPH, MD, PhD Candidate has a BSc in Biological Science and Human Geography from the University of Alberta, an MPH from King’s College London, University of London and MD from the University of Limerick.  He is currently a Pediatric Resident and completing his PhD in Medical Sciences, Pediatrics at the University of Alberta.  He is the co-founder of World Interdisciplinary Forum for Healthcare which was formed following The Network:  Towards Unity for Health (TUFH) 2018 International Conference. Students from across 13 countries and 5 continents committed themselves to reinventing the way students passionate about healthcare (whether from medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, business, engineering, etc.) engage with one another in joint learning, research, and advocacy. Together, we hope to improve the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve locally, nationally, and internationally by developing innovative interdisciplinary approaches to local healthcare issues, all while sharing and accessing the great ideas being developed around the world.

Dr. Abdullah Saleh, MD is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. An alumni of the University of Calgary he currently works as a pediatric surgeon at the Stollery Children's/University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. He established the Office of Global Surgery which develops global partnerships to improve access to surgical care and trains clinicians and global health innovators. He co-founded and directs Innovative Canadians for Change (ICChange), a not for profit social enterprise which raises funds for international development initiatives.  Other projects he’s been involved with include providing vocational training and access to high-efficiency stoves to refugees on the Burma-Thai border and the Kenya Ceramic Project, a water-filtration initiative that provides clean drinking water for 100,000 Kenyans.

Open to full-time students at any level of study participating in programs outside of Canada of at least three weeks in length. Students must have a GPA of at least 2.7 over their last two semesters (Fall 2021 and Winter 2021). The value of the award ranges from $750 to $3,750 depending on the length of the program. The Consular Corps Award supports studies and research that enhance students’ knowledge of international relations and development in such areas as diplomacy, conflict, trade and cultural relations, as well as Canada’s role in advancing world peace and economic development. It may be of particular interest to students going out on exchange or a summer program who are studying in that field, and if there are any students heading out for research. Graduate and PhD students are also eligible. There is also a digital poster that I'm attaching to this email that can be sent out to promote the award.

If you have inquiries on any of the awards listed above, please email eapaward@ualberta.ca.

Tragically, in Ethiopia over 1 in every 250 pregnancies results in the death of the mother, and 1 in 30 the death of a newborn baby. The Ethiopian government is working to ensure access to skilled care during childbirth by increasing the number of hospitals and health centres across the country. Health facilities provide staff with the technical capacities, supplies, medicines, and equipment needed to manage complications and prevent deaths.  But due to lack of knowledge in their communities, many expectant mothers don't make use of these facilities. With greater community awareness most of these senseless deaths can be prevented.

In response, Dr. Michael Frishkopf, Professor & Associate Chair (Graduate Studies), Dept. of Music at the U of A and his associates Dr. Roger Turnell & Dr. Khalid Aziz produced the song “If You Have Heart(Lib Yaleh) featuring two of Ethiopia’s biggest stars, Zeritu Kebede and Tadele Gemechu, singing in the country’s two most widely understood languages (Amharic and Oromo). Dr. Frishkopf and his associates are using radio to broadcast this song and deliver its life-saving message to Ethiopian communities.

The Global Health program encourages the public to join us in supporting Dr. Frishkopf's important work by donating funds to the Canadian based charity Farm Radio International. These funds will go to pay for radio air time to disseminate the song's vital message.

Donations made to Farm Radio International are eligible for a Canadian tax receipt.
