In partnership with the Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS), the University of Alberta Office of Global Surgery (OGS) is hosting an in-person session during this year’s Bethune Roundtable Conference. The Bethune Round Table (BRT) is an annual interdisciplinary meeting dedicated to tackling the challenges of delivering accessible, high-quality surgical care to marginalized patients in low-resource settings.

Effective leaders are pivotal in building capacity, mobilizing resources, advocating for policy changes, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations necessary to improve surgical care, access and outcomes.

This event is open to all students, medical trainees, health professionals and individuals from diverse disciplines.

We will focus on exploring the role of leadership in advancing global surgical care. The program will include rounds, panel discussions, research presentations and expert speakers in global surgery who will share insights and experiences.

OBJECTIVES
  • To highlight the need and value of leadership development in global surgery
  • To explore the current gaps in leadership and management within the field of global surgery
  • To stimulate discussion on the opportunities that exist for enhancing leadership development and leadership can evolve to meet future needs and global challenges
  • To provide a platform for sharing best practices and innovative approaches to building leadership capacities within the global surgery community

One year into its 'forgotten war', Sudan is a 'blood soaked playground' barreling towards famine
"Deaths in Sudan could reach 10,000 per day in the coming months if the mass displacement of people caused by a year-long civil war sparks famine.
The dire projection, which represents a worst case scenario and would put the conflict on a par with the worst days of the Battle of the Somme, was being urgently debated by Western envoys and diplomats this week.
Other actors, including the World Food Programme, say the estimates are exaggerated but accept that a major humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding.
Monday marks the first anniversary of Sudan’s “forgotten war”; one that has been overshadowed in the western media by the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
Yet the suffering caused by the fighting is immense – and the geopolitical ramifications far from insignificant." Read more
International Electives:
UME Students & PGME Residents

If you are a UME student at the UAlberta, learn all about taking International Electives by going to the Global Health website.  There are many steps required to take an international elective to follow the University of Alberta and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry's policy on International Electives.  An important step is taking the Global Health Education & Advocacy 12-hour elective which is a pre-requisite to taking all International Electives.  General questions about the steps and specific questions regarding Field Stations can be sent to ghfomd@ualberta.ca.  Those with questions about European Electives specifically, can contact Dr. Steven Caldwell at ssc2@ualberta.ca.
