Lake Okeechobee Approaching Discharge Level
A reminder to our members to PLEASE BE PREPARED as we approach the peak of the hurricane season  (September 10th) and the very likely scenario of toxic discharges from Lake Okeechobee if we do get a storm. The graph below shows the lake levels over the years. **Note how high Lake O is right now compared to past years.**

LTC Todd Polk Retires
LTC Todd Polk, Deputy District Commander for South Florida with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retired this month. LTC Polk came to all of our Rivers Coalition public meetings and was extremely responsive on reporting updates to the Coalition. We all appreciated working with him over the years and wish him well!
We would like to welcome his replacement, Major Cory Bell, whom we look forward to working with. Stay tuned for more information on Major Bell in an upcoming newsletter.
Friends of the Everglades' "Sugar Reform Now" Petition

Every 5 years Congress renews the Farm Bill. For the better part of a century, the U.S. Farm Bill has protected billionaire-backed sugar companies at the expense of clean air and water in Florida.

The current Farm Bill expires September 30, 2023. Friends of the Everglades is calling on Congress to stop subsidizing the environmental and human-rights abuses of Big Sugar by ending the sugar program.

Join the movement demanding an end to sugar handouts in the Farm Bill by signing the Sugar Reform Now petition

She talked in length about 2 upcoming programs: (1) a long-term water-quality monitoring program, and (2) a seagrass project. A Q&A session took place with regard to the above and STAs.
City of Stuart/LOSOM: Ben Hogarth stated the city’s main project is managing stormwater runoff and talked about how the city is following the BMAP guidelines. He also discussed LOSOM and the importance of the USACE’s flexibility in recovery operations.
Dr. Paul Gray elaborated on the fact that 2 of the 3 triggers for recovery operation are in place; the 3rd being the lake level. Currently the lake is stressed due to the deep water.
SFWMD: N/A
USACE: Lt. Col. Polk thanked the City of Stuart for its letter of support with regard to LOSOM. He is retiring in August of this year.

Public and Closing Comments:

She discussed the topic of farms getting their own restoration areas and why it has not been at the forefront. Diane reminded us of the Right to Clean Water petitions.

Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch commented (via Zoom) that we should be restoring the land around Lake Okeechobee to what it once was.
