Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 11:00 a.m.
“Eastern Thoughts on Happiness for the Western Mind"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Second Sundays: Susan Stone, piano
Greeters: Bea Lothrop & Elizabeth Wallace

Sermon Topic:
The Western intellectual tradition suggests that in order to be happy, what we need to do most of all is to go out and subdue the world; secure resources, found businesses, run governments, gain fame and conquer nations.

By contrast, the Eastern tradition has for a long while told us something very different. In both its Buddhist and Hindu strands, it has insisted that contentment requires us to learn to conquer not the world but the instrument through which we view this world, namely our minds. Let's explore!

We want to hear from you about your joys and concerns. If you cannot attend in person and would like to be heard, please send your message to Rev. Michael Carter by noon on Friday so he can read it during the Sunday service.

You can livestream the Sunday Service and also see prior Sunday Services on YouTube. Click to go to YouTube hereor go to YouTube.com and search for UUCSV Productions. To view the Sunday Service in progress, click on “Live”. RE (RELIGIOUS EDUCATION)
Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 11:00 a.m.
at UUCSV with Susan E. Hicks

This Sunday will be led by RE volunteer teacher, Erin Spainhour. Erin will lead students in a story about a Unitarian Universalist child who celebrates the pagan harvest holiday, Lammas, by going to a peace rally every year. To illustrate our third Unitarian Universalist Principle, acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth, we’ll learn about magic as a spiritual practice we can use to work for the good of the world. We’ll create our own wands and do a spiral dance. Our guiding words are  "Create Magic."

EXPLORE THE TOPIC TOGETHER. We defined magic today as combining focus, intention and energy. Many other spiritual practices also combine
focus, intention and energy. Tell your child about a spiritual practice you are familiar with and explain how focus, intention and energy are involved. Tell what the practice means to you and how it affirms one or more of our Unitarian Universalist Principles.

"Whatever you think you can do, or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace and power in it." — Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

"Any ritual is an opportunity for transformation." — Starhawk

“The Courage to Change Course”
Rev. Michael J S Carter

It has been said that those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything. A dying tree branch hits a friend in the head and lays open her scalp. When she recovers from the coma, she says someone was trying to tell her something. A loved one discovers a deadly tumor. An expensive ring is lost, or discovers that the internet stock that was guaranteed to make a fortune is worthless. You awake from a dream; you stumble and fall down and break a leg. Life is messy. What does it take for us to "get it?" What does it take for us to change?

There is a Zen saying: “One accident is worth a thousand meditations.”

Tru Earth Fundraiser Update

Do you want to make a difference in the world but don’t know where to start?  How about reducing the use of plastics in your life and helping others make a difference too?  We are continuing with the fundraising with Tru Earth and will share a portion of the funds raised for the next quarter with the  Sierra Club.  So far we have raised $164.86 simply by ordering through the link below.  There are samples of the laundry detergent and the fundraising link on the bulletin board at the church.  Please take a few and share with friends, neighbors and family.  The more people we reach, the greater the impact on plastic reduction and the more money we can share with the Sierra Club.

Tru Earth is a Canadian based company that is pairing with nonprofits to help reduce plastic and they give 20% of the cost of the products offered through this special link below.

https://fundraising.tru.earth/UUCSV

They offer many plastic free products (Toilet bowl cleaners, laundry strips with fragrance free option, dryer balls etc.) They periodically offer sales and
discounts and you can still use all offers from the company, (holiday sales etc.) but we only raise funds (20%) if you use the link (and not the subscription service) When you open the link, there is a blue box at the bottom that says “Access Our Fundraising Store Here”, that is where you start.

Any questions, please email Sue Stone at stonesend@gmail.com

Raise Money for UUCSV While Cleaning Out Those Books

So far this year we have raised $400 simply by getting rid of those books we've been wanting to get out of our house. Jackie Franklin has been kind enough to volunteer her time to take our books to Books For Good who pays us for them!  Then they make them available to folks at a greatly discounted price. It's a win-win situation. All that is required is to bring in the books you would like to donate on Sunday and put them in the box in the Portico labeled "Books For Good".

Note:  At this time they are only accepting books published in the past two years (fiction/non-fiction & hardback/paperback) and all paperback fiction books regardless of publication date.

Thank you for your contributions.
