“Stay Awake”
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Music: Solace (Scott Joplin), Hymn #8 "Mother Spirit, Father Spirit", Both Sides Now (Joni Mitchell, arr. Yukie Smith), Hymn #348 Guide My Feet, Hymn #121 We'll Build a Land, The Times They are A-Changin' (Bob Dylan)

Musician(s): Sue Stone, piano

Sermon Topic:
The word “woke” has long been used, especially among Black folks, to denote that a person should be aware of structural inequality, informed of the nuances of racism and sensitive to the prevalence of anti-Black violence.

The word “woke” is now at the center of the battle over books – a war against wokeness has turned into a war against Black history and sharing the true stories of the Black experience. Woke may feel like a term that has lost all coherent meaning or one that has been twisted so much it has bent into a slur, but its roots, undoubtedly, are Black. Woke used to belong to African Americans. Let's explore.

We want to hear from you about your joys and concerns. If you cannot attend in person and would like to be heard, please send your message to Rev. Michael Carter by noon on Friday so he can read it during the Sunday service.

You can livestream the Sunday Service and also see prior Sunday Services on YouTube. Click to go to YouTube hereor go to YouTube.com and search for UUCSV Productions. RE (RELIGIOUS EDUCATION)
Sunday, April 16, 2023 - 11:00 a.m.
at UUCSV with Susan E. Hicks

Well talk about our Seventh Principle, respect for the interdependent web of all existence (of which we are a part) by introducing Beatrix Potter, author of Peter Rabbit and many other children's classics. Beatrix was a naturalist & farmer, author & illustrator and a Unitarian. We will imagine ourselves as various parts of an ecosystem and create a mural to illustrate this, or make individual macro-drawings of things from nature. Our signpost to help guide us in faithful action is "Honor Life.”

For more information about the life and art of Beatrix Potter you can check out this blog.

Looking for ways to reinforce this lesson at home? A family camping trip or hike can be a great way to connect with nature and one another. Even a picnic in the park or backyard can bring your family in closer contact with the natural world. While you are outdoors, talk about the various life forms you find around you.

Or create a new family ritual…Mitakuye oyasin” is a Lakota Sioux phrase that is generally translated as "all my relations." It is a prayer of oneness with all forms of life including people, animals, birds, insects, plants and even rocks! This prayer  expresses a concept similar to the interdependent web of all existence. You may wish to use “mitakuye
oyasin” or "all my relations" as a prayer of gratitude and appreciation when you notice beauty in nature or evidence of nature's interconnections. The words can also serve as a closing phrase for other prayers, such as table grace or prayers at bedtime.

Our Mystery Friends project is wrapping up soon! Be sure to bring in those lasts notes/tokens and reply to the Google Doodle with your party date availability!

“Fully Embracing & Sustaining Our Higher Frequencies ”
Chaitanya

Despite our highest intentions, we tend to lose momentum, stop, then start again. It can take significant energy to begin anew. We may become disheartened and even self-denigrating. Often, we know what we want to do, so why does it "fall apart"? Why do we allow the world to sabotage us, pulling us down from the beautiful spaces that we've accessed? What are the keys to sustaining a vibrant, pure frequency? As part of the service, we'll sing a few universal mantras as a powerful, joyful way to stay in a higher vibration.

SHARE THE BOUNTY—BUT HOW?

Plans for the 5th Annual Auction are well under way, and we need your ideas and input on how to share the money we raise. In the past we’ve used part of the funds for Bounty & Soul, the MLK program, the Thomas Chapel AME Church, and, of course, our own RE program’s playground improvements. Where shall we spread the wealth in 2023?

Please share your ideas and suggestions about worthy nonprofit organizations in the Black Mountain community that impact the lives and wellbeing of a significant number of people. Send your ideas to Larry Pearlman, Auction chair, at LarryRPearlman42@gmail.com so we can decide whom to support this year.

Weekly Institute - May 17 - 19, 2023
Weekend Gathering - May 19 - 21, 2023
The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center - Highlands, NC

UUWomenSpirit has been meeting twice a year at The Mountain, the beautiful retreat center near Highlands, NC, for over 30 years. This May, the retreat focuses on ancient Mayan wisdom. UUCSV's Annelinde Metzner, Maggie Moon O'Neill, and Peggy Moore are all presenters at this event.

Description of the events and link to register
Mayan elders say it is time for ancient indigenous wisdom to be shared with the world to help birth the New Era, a new Great Cycle that is a balance of Divine female & male energies. At UUWomenspirit’s Spring event, we will
follow the sacred Mayan calendar days and we will walk together on what the Maya call the Sacred Road, The Sac Be. Our vision is that by honoring the wisdom of the indigenous cultures of this land we live on and coming together in the Mayan Sacred time, we can be in a better relationship with Mother Earth, the Divine, ourselves and each other. The registration link can be found hereJoin us!

Raise Money for UUCSV While Cleaning Out Those Books

So far this year we have raised $400 simply by getting rid of those books we've been wanting to get out of our house. Jackie Franklin has been kind enough to volunteer her time to take our books to Books For Good who pays us for them!  Then they make them available to folks at a greatly discounted price.  It's a win-win situation. All that is required is to bring in the books you'd like to donate on Sunday and put them in the box in the Portico labeled "Books For Good".

Note:  At this time they are only accepting books published in the past two years (fiction/non-fiction & hardback/paperback) and all paperback fiction books regardless of publication date.

Thank you for your contributions.
