Sermon Topic:
What gifts are you not using in this life? What of your inner wealth are you not sharing with the world? All of us are wounded creatures. All of us have had wounds to our self-esteem. These wounds have come from family, friends, religions and the world. None of us escape this. These wounds sometimes devastate entire lives.

They have come from poverty, self–identifying with the poverty around them, internalized the racism, the abuse they suffered or
witnessed, and thereby collude with victimization. Others find their resolve to achieve triggered by these circumstances.

Carl Jung observed that there are times when behind the wounds lies the source of a person’s genius. Let's explore.

We want to hear from you about your joys and concerns. If you cannot attend in person and would like to be heard, please send your message to Rev. Michael Carter by noon on Friday so he can read it during the Sunday service.

The YouTube video of today's service will be available, as well as all previous Sunday Services, at UUCSV Productions. Click to go to YouTube here. Once on the YouTube site, go to “Videos” for services prior to March 19, 2023, and to “Live” for services starting March 19, 2023.

“Inviting Delight”
Jewelsong

There are always a multitude of challenges in this world, and the last few years have been especially stressful for many of us. As an antidote to this, how do we stay connected to Source, to Center, to our true selves? One way is to enjoy, appreciate, and cultivate Delight! Jewelsong will share some of our favorite delights through music,
poetry, and inspiring texts, and will offer a guided meditation so we can each travel to our own inner Land of Delight.

From Building & Grounds Committee

There have been articles in the Citizen Times (Things to know about Asheville Honey Festival, honeybee population (citizen-times.com) and from Bee City USA (No Mow May - Bee City USA), to name a few, regarding mowing less and/or adding flowering species to your grass. These actions can increase the abundance and diversity of wildlife, including bees and other pollinators. UUCSV is looking at our own mowing practices, and wanted to share this
information with the whole congregation.

Update On Picture Directory

The membership committee has revised its approach to creating a photo
directory and now plans to create a printed one as opposed to one available for emailing. Many of you have already sent pictures but if you haven’t, please do so by April 30, 2023. We hope to have the photo directory available at the annual meeting. Photos can be sent to Carol Sheeler at sheelerjc@att.net or texted to 828-777-2109. You may also use this
number if you have questions. Please enclose your name(s) when sending the photo. Head shots are preferred. We hope we can include you in the directory.

Biden's Proposed Asylum Ban, You Can Act
Steps You Can Take To Oppose The Ban

1. Make a personalized public comment on the rule: HERE with UUSC guidance
2. Write your Federal legislators urging them to repudiate the Ban: HERE with UUSJ
3. Voice your moral concern via social media, use the Church World Service toolkit (see more below)

UUSJ and UUSC are participating in a push for as many public comments as possible through March 27 at 12:00pm-Midnight ET (11pmCT, 10pmMT, 9pmPT) as part of the Interfaith Immigration Coalition (IIC). Various IIC collaborators are offering helpful learning opportunities and materials in support.

UUSJ is taking this step to apply both formal and informal pressure on the process precisely because a debate is vigorously underway within the administration about whether or not the rule is wise. We want to empower the champions' party to the discussion with public concern by faith-based advocates to denounce and reject the ban.

In late February, the Biden administration, specifically the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a proposed administrative rule (DHS Fact Sheet) that will effectively bar from asylum most of the migrants who arrive at our southern border (U.S.-Mexico).
  • The rule means, any migrant that crossed the border without authorization and who did not seek asylum in a third country that they traveled through on the way to the U.S. will be presumed ineligible for asylum. This would place an extra burden on vulnerable migrants, especially those fleeing danger and harm.
  • The new rule is viewed as a violation of Biden’s campaign promise for a just asylum system. It seems to draw inspiration from the prior administration (Human Rights First)(The Guardian)(Politico)(Religion News Service).
  • The proposal includes two asylum restrictions (an asylum “transit ban” and an asylum “entry ban”) that were repeatedly struck down by federal courts for denying the fundamental right to seek protection.
  • The rule would make it nearly impossible for non-Mexican migrants who arrive at the border to access asylum, finding a process tilted against them, away from compassion and dignity, designed to send them back. Often to danger.
  • U.S. and international law explicitly guarantee the right to seek asylum. That is the right to make the case for protection from persecution. The proposed rule violates that basic legal tenet, setting a bad global standard led by the U.S.

Update on Jane Carroll

Jane Carroll, known as “Classic Jane”, not to be confused with Jane Carroll of Beetree, has moved to Virginia to be close to her son. She is having some health challenges and is living in an assisted living facility. Jane was president of the congregation in the early years and was responsible for getting us connected with our Sister Congregation in Medesur Romania. The embroidered fabric on the piano came from the women of that church. She also put together the display about Medesur that hangs on the wall in the back of the sanctuary. She would love to receive some cards from us. Send to Jane Carroll at 114 Ware Rd., Williamsburg, VA, 23185.
