This Sunday at UUCSV
Sunday, March 5, 2023 - 11:00 a.m."Waking Up to Your Dreams"
Tayria Ward, Ph.D.

Dreams are a universal language spoken by all living things. Everything dreams! Babies dream, animals dream, plants, trees, the Earth itself is dreaming. Scriptures throughout the world tell countless stories of dreams that guided the people. Buddha’s teachings are condensed in 5 famous dreams of his. Mohammad received the Koran in dreams. Joseph was told in a dream to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt.

With the dawn of the Age of Reason over the last few centuries, the ways of knowing through the symbolic and mythic language of the dream became marginalized and mostly forgotten. Losing the dreaming, it would seem that we have lost our way. However, we can recover this language, and thereby remember who we are and our connection to the Dreamtime dimension of consciousness available to us at all times, waking and sleeping.

We will explore these ideas, as well as suggestions for ways to work with your personal dreams in this presentation. Watch your dreams!

“What It Means to be A Sentient Being”
Rev. Michael J S Carter

On occasion you have heard me refer to the animal kingdom as well as human beings as sentient beings. The Dali Lama and the philosophy of Buddhism talk about showing kindness to creation, to sentient life. Native Americans refer to nature and its
inhabitants at times as different tribes or nations. The Bird tribe or nation, the Winged tribe or nation, etc. They refer to Extraterrestrial life as people
belonging to the Star Nations or Star People. For me, the reasoning is obvious. It shows a connection with all that is, in the hopes that perhaps if we saw others as connected to us, as other nations or tribes or even people, we would treat them better. Today we explore what it means to be sentient---a sentient being.

Message from the Safety Committee

The UUCSV is always concerned with the safety of our congregation. In the past two years, we have instituted the following measures to help keep us safe: building improvements such as window coverings in Rev. Carter's
office and RE rooms, and door locking and monitoring during services. We also believe that preparing yourself by watching this video can keep you safe if you ever find yourself in an active shooter situation, whether at church, the grocery store, or any other gathering. Here's a link to this FBI-approved short video.

UUCSV Women's Group Update

The UUCSV Women's Group will meet on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. Deb Evenchik will host the gathering. The theme this month will be “Music”.

Please plan to share a song that moves or inspires or otherwise means something to you and explain why you chose that song. You can sing it, share the words, play it, describe it, etc.
  • If you’d like to play it, and will let Deb know what the song is and who sings it before the event, Rochelle will create a play list and play it through her phone and speaker so everyone can hear it.
  • If you want to bring a musical instrument or use the piano to play or sing it, feel free.
  • If you want Deb to accompany you on guitar, let her know what the song is ahead of time.
We will gather, socialize, and have snacks from 5:30-5:50 p.m., and then leave the food and drinks behind and go into the Sanctuary if anyone wants to have the piano available. Deb will provide drinks. You are welcome to bring snacks. Deb’s contact info is 615.351.4364 or dleconsulting@gmail.com.

Canvass Drive - UPDATE

As Rev. Michael Carter said, the Bounty of our Faith is in our collective
members and friends. As we begin our Canvass drive we would like to begin with a strong start. Please click on this link to make your financial commitment to our Congregation for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The Stewardship committee's recommendation is to grow the total amount of commitments by 7% from last year to reflect the impact of inflation. Thanks in advance for helping to continue our success and contributing to the longevity of our church.

Please click on this link or fill out the pledge sheet that will be in your Order of Service this Sunday to make your financial commitment.

From the Desk of the Board President
Calling all UUCSV Experts
“Tell Us Who You Are and What You Know”

UUCSV continues to grow our membership, and as a growing congregation, support from those knowledgeable in business and other areas are valuable resources in carrying out the work of the Board and our various committees. Experience in the fields of Law, Finance, Medicine, Environmental/Conservation, Human Resources, Fundraising or experience with running a non-profit are just a few areas where knowledgeable resources would be very helpful to us . If you, either now or in the future, would be
willing to either serve as a Board member or allow us to periodically tap into your expertise in any of these fields or other applicable fields, please contact me. We will be developing a database to capture information on the skills that our Congregants possess in the various areas that may help inform the work done by the UUCSV Board or its committees.

We will always be stronger together, so the knowledge that you bring to the table could be of great value to our congregation. Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Membership Committee Update - Photo Directory

Many church members have been requesting a photo directory. After much discussion on how to proceed, we now have a plan. If you are in the directory as a member or friend you can do one of the following:

  1. Let us take your picture. It can be done before or after a church service or when it is convenient for you.
  2. You can send a picture of yourself via email or text to me, Carol Sheeler, at sheelerjc@att.net or 828-777-2109 (I’m in the directory). Be sure to add your name(s) if you send a picture. If you are listed as a couple, send one picture of the both of you. If you have any questions please contact me. Some of you might not wish to add your picture. We certainly respect that.
See you in the directory!
