11:00 a.m. at UUCSV with Susan E. Hicks

In this week's session:
We’ll learn about the fifth Unitarian Universalist Principle, the right of
conscience and the use of the democratic process. We’ll hear about Maria Cook (1779-1835), an early Universalist preacher who responded to an unfair vagrancy charge by practicing passive resistance and then preached Universalism to others in prison. We’ll role-play scenarios in which people felt they were being treated unfairly and talk about ways the characters could
respond. Children will have the chance to stand in the middle of our group
circle and voice something they object to, why they object to it and what they think would be a better way.

Explore the topic together at home:
Ask your child what they or others spoke about in the "I Object!" circle. Why did they object, and what did they tell the group they thought would be better? If your child did not share an objection, they can tell you how they felt about objections raised by others in the group. Share your own thoughts on
something that really bothers you, which you think is wrong. Share why, and suggest a better course. Then, thank your child for allowing you to speak out.

If you're looking for a story to share at home,
recommend Your Voice is Your Superpower, by Jessica & Sandy Bohrer.

The Blessing Bags project has proven so successful with our children that I’d like to keep it going. If you have personal items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand warmers, granola bars, etc.) to donate to the RE blessing bags for the unhoused please bring them in and place them in the pink bucket in the
portico! Filled bags will be available near the coffee station for anyone who wants to distribute them. Thanks for your support.

“Aging Is a Gift”
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Poem on aging by Maya Angelou:

“When you see me walking, stumbling, don’t study and get it wrong. Cause tired don’t mean lazy and every goodbye ain’t gone. I’m the same person I was back then, with a little less hair, and a little less chin. A lot less lungs and much less wind, But ain’t I lucky I can still breathe in.”

I have learned that aging is necessary but maturity is optional. However, if Madison Ave. had its way, while living in a culture that fights aging with all the energy it can muster, I wonder if we as a culture will ever really come to accept the gift of aging. This talk is my contribution to that acceptance. Hope you can join us.

Foyer Re-design

You're going to notice that the foyer has undergone some significant changes! The Bulletin Board has been moved out of the hallway leading into the office and into the foyer proper. The Communications Committee would love the congregation to get involved with posting articles (UUCSV group articles, events, etc.) and keeping the bulletin board fresh, current and engaging.

The nametags have been moved to the portico, above the coffee station. Where the nametags used to be, there is a new board featuring new
members of the congregation.

New Americans - Update

Thank you to all of our members who have helped our New American family. They have now been here for a year and much progress has been made: Aziz recently received a promotion at work, which will help with their
increasing need to be self-sufficient as government programs phase down or out. He is learning to drive a manual transmission car—if you would like to assist with this venture, please let our coordinators know. We also would like to remind you of ongoing needs for Similac Advance Formula and Size 1 diapers for the newest family member. (You can bring these items to church for the women's group meeting on Thursday of this week or to service on Sunday). In addition, the family will need to vacate their current address at the end of April, so we need help finding a (preferably) 3 bedroom/2 bath rental home for them to share with friends.

Reach out to Katherine Tharp or Jane Carroll with help or questions.

Covenant Group Announcement - START DATE CORRECTED

The new covenant group dealing with the 8th principle work to "dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions" is set to begin on Sunday, January 22, 2023, at 3:30 p.m. in Evelyn's Room at UUCSV. Our group utilizes the concepts and practices of author, Resmaa Menakem, who asks us to acknowledge and work to end the trauma of white body supremacy in ourselves and our culture. People who have signed up to
participate will receive the Covenant Group Guidelines along with first
session questions towards the end of this week. Due to a late cancellation, we still have room for one or two people in our small (maximum 8 people) committed group. If you have interest in becoming a member, please reach out before January 15, 2023, so that you can have the information you need to make this commitment. The group will meet the 2nd and 4th Sundays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. for a total of ten sessions ending on June 11, 2023.
