“A Press Conference with God"
Jeff Hutchins

Music - Sue Stone, piano

Jeff Hutchins, a friend of UUCSV since 2008, will present “A Press Conference with God,” which he calls “a bit of theological theatre.” Jeff led this service twice here years ago. He will portray God’s press secretary, come here to answer your questions for God.

So… what would you ask God if you had the chance? Your questions may be serious, silly, or anything in between, and UU’s of all ages are encouraged to join in. Jeff will pick about a dozen questions that he will “submit to God”
before the service. This service is meant to be satirical and thought
provoking, but not blasphemous or offensive. There will be an opportunity for discussion for those who wish to comment or continue the dialogue.

Jeff will have for sale copies of his book based on previous press conferences.

No virtual RE
11:00 a.m. at UUCSV with Susan Hicks

This week we’ll discuss generosity, charity and hear the story The Baker’s Dozen by Aaron Shepard & Wendy Edelson (a Saint Nicholas Tale). We may also work on fleece scarves to add to our blessing bags for the unhoused.

Adult RE
Join us Monday, December 5, 2022, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. for a lively chat about an interesting topic! We’ll meet in Evelyn’s Room (off the RE main space) to discuss Episode 4 “This Land is My Land” from Michael Sandel’s Justice lectures. To take part in the discussion, all you have to do is show up. Want to prepare a bit more in advance? Watch the video here. We’d love to have a few more participants in this interesting discussion of Morals and Ethics. Refreshments will be provided. Need a ride? Call or text Susan at (828) 450-5319.

We’re still collecting toiletries, non-perishable snacks & such for our blessing bags for the unhoused. Donations can be put in the pink bin at UUCSV through December 11, 2022.

"The Wisdom of the Ancients"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.” - J.R.R. Tolken, from The Fellowship Of The Ring, 1954

I want to discuss a few world views of diverse cultures that I feel can be extremely helpful today, in our chaotic and challenging world, in encouraging a healthy sense of community on a micro and macro level.
News from UUCSV Groups & Committees

New Americans - UPDATE

Continued thanks to everyone for all of the generous donations for our
family. We have an abundance of infant diapers for now, but we also need big girl diapers (size 4). Gift cards are always welcome and appreciated.

UUCSV Women's Group - UPDATE

The UUCSV Women's Group will meet on Thursday, December 7, at 5:30 p.m. Jackie Franklin will host the gathering in the portico of the church. The focus this month will be on...FUN! We will play a fun Gift Exchange Game (see below) and tell humorous stories from holidays past. Your host will
provide drinks so bring some snacks and your smiles. Seasonal garb is
welcome. All UU members and friends who identify as female are welcome.

In the Gift Exchange Game each player brings a gift, wrapped so you can't see the gift. Each player draws a number and takes a turn in order, starting with 1. Players may choose to take a gift from the table, or she may choose to “steal” a gift from someone else.

Use your imagination and find simple gifts around your house or something you made. Examples are a poem, a book you would like to pass on, a pretty card or photo, homemade goodies or things from your garden. We also
encourage some “white elephant” gifts which makes choosing more interesting. The purpose of the game is to have fun.

Auction Update - Scarf is still available

Someone asked me if I had one more scarf like this. The scarf is available and I told the inquirer, mistakenly, that it was not. If you are that person, please contact Larry Pearlman (larryrpearlman42@gmail.com) and become the proud owner of this scarf while you add to the auction total revenue.

Proposed Amendment - 8th Principle Learning & Leadership

As part of the UU Justice NC offerings, a couple of us have been attending some of the sessions on 8th Principle Learning and Leadership. One part of November's presentation was on the Article II proposal that is in its last week for review before submission to our next GA. If you have not had a chance to take a look and comment, this week will be your final opportunity. The
proposal would change the by-laws to include some of the language of our principles with more emphasis on the ways our values are shaped by the central value of LOVE and are interdependent, always evolving and require accountability through action. You can read and comment by going to the UUA website and looking under Article 2, Section 2.2 Values and Covenant.  Anyone interested in taking a more active role in 8th Principle Work can also connect with UU Justice NC and our monthly meetings. The next meeting will be December 18th at 4 PM via zoom. Contact Anna or Deb if you are interested in 8th principle action.

Sacred Circle Dance for Winter Solstice
Light Center - Black Mountain
December 11, 2022 - 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Please join Maggie Moon and friends in Sacred Circle Dances to celebrate the Winter Solstice and the return of the Light.

All are welcome, high school and older. No previous experience or partners are needed and each dance is gently taught. Newcomers warmly welcomed, so come and bring a friend along! Your suggested donation of $12-15
supports the Light Center.

For this Winter Solstice event, please WEAR ALL WHITE if you can, or at least something white (such as a scarf) which symbolizes the return of the Light. We will have extra lights and candles for this festive event.

Committee Calendars

Please start submitting your committee calendar dates for meetings at UUCSV so I can insert them into the online calendar. Especially during the winter months, Building & Grounds would like to warm up whichever room you're meeting in, in advance. Please include which room along with
committee name/date/time.

Thank you,
Michael Donnan - Office Manager UUCSV and Building & Grounds

Tru Earth
Reduce the use of plastic products in your life!

Do you want to make a difference in the world but don’t know where to start?  How about reducing the use of Plastics in your life and at the same time earn money for our Social Action Committee to fund projects.

Did you know that 700,000,000 plastic laundry jugs are dumped into landfills across North America every year. This plastic can take more than 100 years to break down. Now we have plastic free options by using laundry strips
instead of plastic jugs of detergent. As a side benefit, think of the cabinet space you can recover.

Tru Earth is a Canadian based company that is pairing with nonprofits to help reduce plastic and they give 20% of the cost of the products offered through this special link below.

They offer many plastic-free products (Toilet bowl cleaners, laundry strips with fragrance free option, dryer balls etc.) Right now, they are offering a number of holiday discounts. You can still use all offers from the company, (holiday sales, etc.) but we only get our 20% if you use the link.

When you open the link, there is a blue box at the bottom that says "Access Our Fundraising store here", and that is where you start.

Please take the time to go in (thru the link) and shop the products and the deals. Think Holiday gifts for family and friends, stocking stuffers and presents to help everyone make the change! Share this link with your family and friends who can then  share the link with others. If you already use these products and have a subscription (scheduled deliveries) the 20% discount will not work, you would need to use the link to help with this fundraiser. If you have any questions, please email Sue Stone (the other Sue Stone) at stonesend@gmail.com.

Many of us already use the laundry strips and have been happy with the
results. Sue will be in the portico after service the next few services and will have some samples for you to try before you order.
