“Atheism 2.0"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Music: Linda Metzner, choir director; Sue Stone, piano

Lately, I have been thinking about whether or not UUism is a religion. The ideas I am going to express are my own, but it has been on my mind. I am not going to try to convince you one way or the other; that is up to you and it may not really be that important in the long run. How can a religion appeal to an atheist or humanist or an agnostic? I have come to the conclusion that it is both a blessing and a curse for us as UUs and by that, I mean it may be the reason we as UUs don’t have a so-called “elevator speech” when someone asks us what it is that we believe. We can’t do it in 10 seconds or less (or even thirty seconds or less). That is the curse.

The blessing on the other hand, is that in a world that is destroying itself over many things (religion being one of the many) our secular acceptance and stance with regards to having people in our congregations and denomination who do not believe in a god, who are non-theistic, may be the wave of the future, at least in a world that appears to becoming less religious, depending on the circumstances. Let's unpack this together.

NOTE: Rev. Michael mentioned an article at last Sunday's service regarding the future of American religion. You can read the interesting article here.

RE (Religious Education)
October 23, 2022
No Virtual RE this week
11:00 a.m. at UUCSV - RE with Erin Spainhour
(Nursery Care as needed by Carolyn & Milt). Susan is away this week.

Parents looking for a story and discussion to share with children at home can watch Saturday at the Food Pantry by Diane O’Neill and discuss food
insecurity with their children. Later this fall we’ll be once again creating Blessing Bags for the homeless and discussing homelessness in RE.

We need Nursery/Preschool Volunteers! In order to have a safe space for our youngest visitors, we need volunteer helpers to watch young children. If you’re available to be a part of our Childcare Team (which means you would sign up to be available certain Sundays of your choice should childcare be needed) please contact Susan at 828 450-5319.

Parents, I’ve only had 1 family register for RE this year! Please be sure fill out the RE registration form here to have your child officially enrolled in RE this year. Thank you!

Next week we’ll be making “Bone Soup” and creating a group ancestors altar together. If you have an InstaPot we could borrow, please contact Susan.

“Honoring Our Ancestors Through Celtic Spirituality"
Peggy Moore

Samhain is one of the Celtic Holy Days, the end of the
ancient calendar year and the day to Honor the Ancestors. Long ago, when our ancestors experienced their lives intricately woven with Earth's  cycles, they saw certain times of the year as gateways or magical thresholds between the visible and invisible worlds. For those who acknowledge Celtic Spirituality, the lighting of the Samhain Fire ushers in the Dark Time of the Wheel of the Year and a time of introspection.

We can celebrate Samhain by calling in the guardians of the elements of Fire, Earth, Air and Water. We give thanks to our ancestors who created the way for us and join our footsteps with all those who hold the Earth as sacred and all life as holy.

We will, together, create an Ancestor Altar.  If you would like to bring a small item or a picture of your ancestors, it can be placed on the altar.
News from UUCSV Groups & Committees

Hello, Fellow UUCSV UUs! (how’s that for an acronym?)

We’ve collected over 100 interesting, unique, and wonderful items for our fourth annual UUCSV auction, coming up in just a few weeks. The online
virtual auction begins at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 6. Then on Saturday, November 12, 2022 the virtual auction ends at 12:00 p.m. and the live auction (and pot luck!) starts at 6 p.m.

If you haven’t donated yet, get in touch with Deb Vingle (DebRVingle@gmail.com), Rochelle Broome (harleymobiledoc@gmail.com) or Jim Carillon (jimcarillon@gmail.com) to tell us what you’d like to give, and we’ll add it to the collection. Bear in mind that many of the most popular
auction lots are hospitality based: home parties, special events (like a murder mystery evening), tickets to a wonderful evening out, etc.

BUT… that doesn’t mean we don’t have “stuff”! This year we’ll have paintings, vintage clothing, a beautiful duvet and shams, household items, gift
certificates for your favorite local businesses (Black Mountain Yarn Shop, Tyson’s, Black Mountain Bistro)—and tickets for the Swannanoa Valley Museum (perfect for kids!), the Asheville Symphony, and White Horse Tavern. One of our members has even donated a hobby racing sailboat, fully rigged, along with one sailing lesson!

Once again we’ll have wonderful food overseen by our favorite in-house caterers, Alice and David Wells. If you’d like to help, they could use
contributions of hors d’oeuvres and desserts (call Alice at 828-255-4583 for suggestions); as well as helping with clean-up at the end of the evening. Let them know if you can stay to help at dmw8@psu.edu.

So, get ready for the auction, as either—or both—a donor and a buyer. Tickets will be available on the UUCSV website (date TBD); they cost only $10 per person, and include the wonderful potluck dinner, entertainment by Spence Foscue, David Reid, and perhaps others!

Webinar Announcement
Land Reparations: A Journey of the Heart

November 2, 2022 - 7:30-9:30 p.m. EST via Zoom
Hosted by Tom Kunesh, David Raymond & Nia To Go There

Recent webinars on Land Acknowledgement (available here) highlighted and underscored the significance of understanding that the land on which we live, work and worship is land to which its original inhabitants belonged and from whom it was stolen. We emphasized that acknowledging this systemic land theft was only a first step in healing the injuries a pervasive settler-colonist culture inflicted on the Indigenous peoples. This webinar extends our conversation from Land Acknowledgement to Land Reparation. Read more and register here.
