“Who Should Not Be a UU"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Music: Linda Metzner, choir director; Sue Stone, piano

I came across this topic while searching the internet regarding the topic of religion and philosophy and I just had to share it with you. The minister is a retired UU minister by the name of Rev. Dr. Tony Larsen. What intrigued me most about this is that when I initially decided to become a UU, there were many folks who criticized my choice. There were comments about us being a “salad bar” religion where you got to pick and choose what you wanted to believe in. What is it exactly that UUs believe in anyway?

At that time (and maybe there still are), there were some UU congregations that actually closed during the summer months when their minister was on vacation and there were comments about that relating to classism. Only wealthy white congregations could afford to do that and besides, who would close a religious institution for the summer?!? I listened, and there were some insights that gave me food for thought, but I decided to stay with UUism.  I also realized that UUism simply isn't for everyone. Allow me to share with you what this retired minister says about those who should not be UUs. See you on Sunday!

11:00 a.m. at UUCSV - Stories & Playtime

This week’s back-to-school read-aloud is Linus The Little Yellow Pencil. The story is about being true to yourself, pressing on, embracing new ideas and
ignoring those who create self-doubt with negativity.

Students at UUCSV will have the opportunity to hear the story and continue working on this year’s RE contributions to the UUSCV Auction. RE Registration forms for the 2022-2023 RE year can be found here.

RE Committee Members and RE Teachers for fall needed!

We need volunteers in our Classrooms and Nursery on Sunday mornings this fall to make sure kids are safe, engaged and young visitors receive quality care. Your commitment might be no more than showing up on a Sunday morning and playing with visiting babies or toddlers when we have them. If you are interested in helping in any way please let Susan know by email REdirector.uusv@gmail.com or by phone at 828.450-5319. Thank you!

"The American Myth & The F Word"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Reading from James Baldwin:

“The American Negro has the great advantage of having never believed the collection of myths to which white Americans cling: That their ancestors were all-freedom loving heroes, that they were born in the greatest country the world has ever seen, or that Americans are invincible in battle and wise in peace, that Americans have always dealt  honorably with Mexicans and Indians and all other neighbors or inferiors, that American men are the world’s most direct and virile, that American women are pure. Negroes know far more about white Americans than that…”

Let's talk about the American Myth and if it can be sustained.

From Ursula Goebels-Ellis:

During the last couple of years we went through a rough time of isolation,
illness and even the loss of loved ones. Facing our own mortality with a focus on making end-of-life decisions seemed to be a normal consequence. I
purchased a plot at the Carolina Memorial Sanctuary in Mills River, NC, and pondered, with a group of aspiring Death Doulas, on how to plan a burial
appropriate to the plot.

Sarah Lasswell, who grows willow on her Moos & Thistle Farm near Lake Lure, invited us to join her in a three day creation process of weaving a burial tray for me. This process was educational and healing in unexpected ways. We would like to share with you what we learned and experienced.

Creative Songwriting Workshop
First Workshop - Thursday, September 15, 2022, 7:00 p.m.
(Thereafter, the first and third Thursday of each month)

Dave Wells and Bill Altork are looking for a small dedicated group of people who want to gather twice a month and work on creating songs and also the music to sing them. This will be an ongoing collaborative effort... Our own
personal music-making workshop!

We will have discussions and share stories and opinions of how the personal creative process works. We will give ourselves assignments to write, share and comment on our progressive efforts from one meeting to the next. We will analyze our own and each other’s work, so it will be helpful to be receptive to constructive criticism from our creative peers. Ultimately we will share our new creative pieces with the group and possibly with our UU congregation at some future date.

Please contact Dave Wells and/or Bill Altork if you would like to signup or have questions.
