2023 Clay Minerals Society Annual Meeting - save the date
|
The 60th Annual CMS Meeting will take place in Austin, Texas from May 20–25, 2023. We will have >30 sessions with four keynote/award presentations. Researchers at the UT-Austin Jackson School of Geosciences and the Bureau of Economic Geology are organizing and hosting this event. Discussions will be linked to examples from the BEG Austin Core Research Center.
This event will take place at the UT-Austin, J.J. Pickle Research Campus, University Commons Center.
The short course will cover chlorite geology, geochemistry, and mineralogy.
Field trips will focus on the clay mineralogy and geology of cave complexes in the Edwards Limestone near Austin, TX. Researchers from National Cave & Karst Research Institute and UT-Austin Jackson School of Geosciences are organizing this event.
The short course will cover chlorite geology, geochemistry, and mineralogy through lectures and core viewing.

Course: From Geology to Closure: How Clays Influence Mining

Clays and clay minerals are present in most mine sites across the globe, but do you understand how they impact the mining process from geological exploration, through the mining and processing stages, and finally towards reclamation? These unique materials can challenge your extraction and thickening processes, as well as your tailings storage facility. In this course, you will learn:
- The properties of clays and clay minerals, including nomenclature, surface area, surface chemistry and plasticity
- Why it is important to measure clays, which methods are available, when to use multiple methods, and how to interpret results
- The implications of clay properties on extraction and tailings management, including a review of clay-water interactions and DLVO theory
- The implications of clay properties on deposits, geotechnical performance and closure

 Prakash Malla and Crawford Elliott were invited to co-edit a special issue of Clays and Clay Minerals on the occurrences and mineralogy of the rare-earth elements in clays, regolith, and argillaceous rocks by Editor-in-Chief Joseph Stucki. Several papers on this topic were presented at the International Clay Conference (ICC) in Istanbul this past summer. This special issue will be capturing some of those papers. It is fitting also to encourage submissions from wider mineralogical communities. Contributions addressing the occurrences and the mineralogy of the REE in the regolith, sedimentary rocks, sediments are welcomed from mineral and geochemical communities beyond the CMS. The “critical” nature of these metals will ensure a wide readership.
We invite CMS members and all readers of this newsletter to consider contributing to this issue. We assure prompt and constructive reviews. We are still envisioning a target date to receive manuscripts by November 1, 2022. If more time is needed then that additional time can be arranged.

Members will have noticed that no issues of Elements magazine have arrived in your mailboxes so far this year. There has been a problem with production for several months. This is now back on track and you should expect to receive the first of the missing issues by mid-September. You will, of course, receive all of the missing issues in due course.
