Sunday, April 24, 2022 - 11:00 a.m.
“Love & Oneness"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Music: Sue Stone, Piano; Linda Metzner, Choir Director

This Sunday I would like to explore two topics with you. The first one is on the definition of "Love." I assure you I have more questions than answers to share with you as greater minds than mine have been musing on this topic for millennia. It appears to be something that can be described but not defined. Very well. The second topic is "Oneness." I will use the following story as a lead in:

On January 2, 2007, Wesley Autry, a 50-year-old African American construction worker and Navy veteran, was waiting for a subway train in Manhattan with his two young daughters at around 12:45 pm. Standing there, Mr. Autry was unaware that he was about to become involved in a sequence of events that would change his life, and that would reveal profound truths about the nature of the human mind. I know… It sounds a bit like a Twilight Zone intro. Perhaps it is... Lastly, I will attempt to tie the two topics together: Oneness & Love. Please join me.

No Virtual RE this week
11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Playground projects and Play at UUCSV
Susan Enwright Hicks, RE Director

There will be no virtual RE this week, but families can watch Wanda’s Roses, a sweet Earth-Day-appropriate story about a community coming
together to make something beautiful if they wish.

Those who can join us in person can help make our public spaces more inviting! From 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., we will have an opportunity to spruce up the RE playground for anyone that is available to help. Please come prepared with work clothes, gloves, wheelbarrows, tools, etc.

We plan on working on the following projects:
  • Spreading mulch (please contact Susan if you have a mulch/sand vendor contact)
  • Cleaning and repairing the existing playground structures
  • Constructing a sandbox
  • Assembling a bicycle rack & bench
  • Planting hostas
  • Applying protective stain to the swing sets
Please come and volunteer your time to beautify the UUCSV RE playground!

Coming Up:

Next week on May 1, 2022, we will come together to celebrate May Day with BYO picnic lunches, music, games and a Maypole dance!

RE/nursery care volunteers are needed!
As we transition into in-person and multi-generational offerings, we need more help in RE spaces to make sure kids are safe, and we can provide care for any young visitors we might have. If you would be willing to volunteer as an RE childcare provider (or be "on-call" when we have need) please contact Susan - REdirector.uusv@gmail.com - 828.450-5319. Thank you!

“Healing Through Music: Body, Mind, Spirit”
Robin Russell Gaiser

Robin Russell Gaiser, MA, CMP, is a musician, writer, and visual artist. After retirement from a career as a high school guidance counselor from Fairfax County, VA, she became a Certified Music Practitioner, providing vocal and instrumental music for the critically and chronically ill, elderly, and dying persons in hospitals, nursing homes, Hospice, other supportive service institutions and private homes.

Robin’s music brought healing, peace & joy, pain relief, sometimes joy, and often ease of transition to her patients, their families and friends, and even caregivers and staff. In 2020, she retired from her last job at the health care center at Givens Estates.

You may be surprised about how music affects body, mind, and spirit as you learn, listen, and experience live musical demonstration during this interactive sermon.

Canvass Drive UPDATE

The Stewardship committee wants to thank everyone who has made their financial commitment to the 2022-23 fiscal year through their pledge during this Canvass drive.  We have received pledges from nearly 70 members and friends and are nearing 90% of our goal.  Last year we were certainly not this far along, and we began a "Fill the gap" campaign to try and recover the difference.

The church subsequently went into the 2021-22 fiscal year with a bit of uncertainty, and we cut major parts out of our budget because of this.  The reality of the year has been substantially different, and we've been exceeding our budgeted contributions almost since day one of the year.
It would be great to go into the next year with more certainty and be able to craft a balanced budget so we can ensure the stability of our church for this year and years to come. Below is the link to the pledge form.

If you have not made a contribution recently or have not been able to get the pledge form to work, please reach out to Evan Yanik or Lee Reading to make your pledge.  Thanks to all!

Active Shooter Response Training - NEW TIME
Monday, April 25, 2022, 4:30 p.m.

“First of all, we escaped, we weren't released or freed," wrote Jeffrey Cohen, one of four hostages in the Colleyvillle, TX synagogue standoff in January. "We escaped because we had training on what to do in the event of an active shooter. This training saved our lives - I am not speaking in hyperbole here - it saved our lives.”

Officer Fineberg of the Black Mountain Police will join us for an informative training session on what to do in the event of an active shooter confrontation. No one needs to be reminded that these unfortunate events are becoming more and more frequent, and can happen anywhere: churches, shopping malls, theaters, etc. We urge you to attend.
