“Easter Sunder for the Unitarian Universalist"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Music: Guest Violist, Marianne Vail; Piano, Linda Metzner

Perhaps the most critical part of the Easter message to UUs is the power within the heart of each person to bring life out of death. In the resurrection story there is both humiliation and death, but in the end, a new life of the spirit. For some, the story is taken quite literally. For others, it means
confronting the deep wounds and scars we have suffered along the way, and then allowing ourselves to be transformed. We learn to forgive ourselves and others. A caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Then the meaning of Easter can
become a powerful experience for many UUs, for it is I, you and they who are risen from the dead. The traditional cry of orthodox Christianity of "he lives" then becomes, "we live."  Let's unpack the Easter message together.

No Virtual RE this week
11:00 a.m. - Egg Hunt, Snack, Crafts and Play at UUCSV
Susan Enwright Hicks, RE Director

There will be no virtual RE this week, but families can watch one of these fun (secular) egg stories on their own: Henri’ Egg Artiste (Susan read this story in years past) or The Great Eggscape

If your family likes to tell the story of Jesus at Easter you might enjoy
The Easter Story (read aloud).

For those interested in celebrating at UUCSV at 11:00 a.m. Susan will be
organizing an egg hunt and some simple crafts and snacks (please notify Susan of any allergy issues).

Looking ahead:
Next Sunday we will have an opportunity to spruce up the RE playground for anyone who’d care to help (wear/bring work clothes and gloves) from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00pm,

On May 1, 2022, we will come together to celebrate May Day as a community with music, games, byo picnic lunches and a chance to dance a May pole! Contact Susan for details and/or to volunteer at REdirector.uusv@gmail.com or 828 450-5319!

RE/nursery care volunteers are needed! As we transition into in-person and multi-generational offerings, we need more help in RE spaces to make sure kids are safe and can provide care for any young visitors we might have. If you would be willing to volunteer as an RE childcare provider (or be "on-call" when we have need) please let Susan know by email at REdirector.uusv@gmail.com or by phone at 828-450-5319. Thank you!

“Love & Oneness”
Rev. Michael J S Carter

This Sunday I would like to explore two topics with you. The first one is on the definition of "Love." I assure you I have more questions than answers to share with you as greater minds than mine have been musing on this topic for millennia. It appears to be something that can be described but not defined. Very well. The second topic is "Oneness." I will use the following story as a lead in:

On January 2, 2007, Wesley Autry, a 50-year-old African American construction worker and Navy veteran, was waiting for a subway train in Manhattan with his two young daughters at around 12:45 pm. Standing there, Mr. Autry was unaware that he was about to become involved in a sequence of events that would change his life, and that would reveal profound truths about the nature of the human mind. I know… It sounds a bit like a Twilight Zone Intro. Perhaps it is... Lastly, I will attempt to tie the two topics together. Oneness & Love. Please join me.

REMINDER - "Mini-Split" Individual Room Heaters & Coolers

Please remember to turn the temperature back down to 60F (for winter & spring months) when you are done using a mini-split in any of the rooms equipped with one! The mini-split in the RE room was left on at a high temperature and ran for days before I discovered it. We have had a
couple of record breaking high electricity bills because of this recurring problem.

Thank you,

Michael Donnan, Office Manager & The Building & Grounds Committee

Canvass Drive UPDATE

The Stewardship committee wants to thank everyone who has made their financial commitment to the 2022-23 fiscal year through their pledge during this Canvass drive.  We have received pledges from nearly 70 members and friends and are nearing 90% of our goal.  Last year we were certainly not this far along, and we began a "Fill the gap" campaign to try and recover the difference.

The church subsequently went into the 2021-22 fiscal year with a bit of uncertainty and we cut major parts out of our budget because of this.  The reality of the year has been substantially different and we've been exceeding our budgeted contributions almost since day one of the year.
It would be great to go into the next year with more certainty and be able to craft a balanced budget so we can ensure the stability of our church for this year and years to come. Below is the link to the pledge form.

If you have not made a contribution recently or have not been able to get the pledge form to work please reach out to Evan Yanik, or Lee Reading to make your pledge.  Thanks to all!

Active Shooter Response Training - NEW TIME
Monday, April 25, 2022, 4:30 p.m.

“First of all, we escaped, we weren't released or freed," wrote Jeffrey Cohen, one of four hostages in the Colleyvillle, TX synagogue standoff in January. "We escaped because we had training on what to do in the event of an active shooter. This training saved our lives - I am not speaking in hyperbole here - it saved our lives.”

Officer Fineberg of the Black Mountain Police will join us for an informative training session on what to do in the event of an active shooter confrontation. No one needs to be reminded that these unfortunate events are becoming more and more frequent, and can happen anywhere: churches, shopping malls, theaters, etc. We urge you to attend.

 Welcoming Circle Update
