“The Right Kind of Refugee"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Music: Sue Stone, piano; Linda Metzner, choir director

The scenes from Ukraine are heart-wrenching to say the least. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has stunned the globe as full-scale war has broken out and has garnered widespread coverage from around the planet. But this reporting has also lifted the veil of the flagrant racist attitudes toward the value, or lack thereof, of non-European life. A
journalist by the name of Lucy Watson proclaimed for I-TV News in Kyiv, "Now the unthinkable has happened to them, and this is not a developing, third world nation; this is Europe." One French commentator on BFM-TV, had this to say: "We are in a European city, and we have cruise missiles firing as though we were in Iraq or Afghanistan, can you imagine?"  Let's not forget that Iraq is literally referred to as "the cradle of civilization." The double
standards are ludicrous.

If anything, the wave of solidarity with Ukraine across the world has been
inspiring. Yet for me as a person of color in this incarnation, it is difficult to not see this as selective solidarity.

When those same missiles landed in Syria and Chechnya, the reactions were more subdued. Let's explore who is the right kind of refugee.

Susan Enwright Hicks, RE Director

This week we’ll celebrate Spring with a just-for-fun reading of The Bad Seed by Jory John.

At 11:00 a.m. Susan will have seeds available for
children at UUCSV to plant in little starter pots, and they will have an opportunity to write notes for Bounty and Soul. After that there will be indoor games or play on the playground. If the weather is pleasant we’ll be outside or if not, we’ll be inside. We request masks be worn inside since not all of our children are old enough to have been vaccinated.

Swannanoa Valley Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Gathering
April 9, 2022

Asheville native, Brandon Priester, will be our featured speaker in our online Prayer Breakfast. This unusual method of gathering together is (of course) made necessary by the pandemic which will still be impacting our lives come April. As we did last year, our 2022 program will be presented via the Internet and can watch whenever you wish. It will first be available starting at 9:00 am on Saturday, April 9, 2022, so tune in then, or anytime thereafter for the next few months.

Mr. Priester is focused on helping to educate underprivileged and underserved youth in Asheville and Buncombe County. He is the full-time Program Advising Specialist at A-B Tech where he is also Co-Chair of the Community Outreach Committee. Brandon is also a member of the MLK Association of Asheville and works part-time for the Mountain Area Workforce Development Board at the Land of Sky Regional Council.

Music will be provided by our own UUCSV Choir and activist/musician David LaMotte.

Feel free to contact Diane Hutchins, Secretary, Swannanoa MLK, at dmh1211@aol.com or

Jean Brown,Treasurer, Swannanoa MLK, allannjean@charter.net.

Building & Grounds Committee Update

The Building and Grounds Committee (BAG Committee) will be requesting the Board of Trustees to hire a cleaning service to prepare the inside of the church building weekly in preparation for the Sunday Service.

We are seeking bids from companies who are bonded and insured. Once
approved by the Board, work will commence in the new fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022.

Auction 2022 Update
Attention members and friends of UUSV!

In 1942 Gen. Douglas MacArthur promised as he left the Philippines, “I shall return.” Half a century after that, film actor Arnold Schwarzenegger asserted, “I’ll be back.” And now our own Larry Pearlman has yet another admonition for us: “I’m coming for you once again—with the UUCSV Auction!”

Yes, the fourth annual UUCSV Auction will take place November, 6-12, 2022, both on-line and live! So start considering what YOU can donate for our major fundraising event of the year. Watch for this logo wherever Auction updates are shown. As always, the most popular items are special events that bring our community together—dinners, interactive games, social events,
service opportunities—so be as creative as you can in thinking about how YOU can be a major donor.

We also need your help right away in selecting the recipient of part of the
proceeds from the auction. In the past, we’ve given to Bounty & Soul, the Thomas Chapel AME Church Restoration Fund, the Swannanoa Valley MLK Celebration and to support the UU playground. Who will be the lucky winner this year? Let Larry Pearlman know of your suggestions no later than April 15 so the Board can make a final decision at their April 28 meeting.

Andy Reed, Auction Publicity Chair

UUSC Emergency Relief Fund
Ukraine Response
Donate Now!

Putin’s war in Ukraine has quickly escalated into a refugee crisis where nearly 900,000 people have been displaced across borders — with the prospect of millions more fleeing the country in the near future. And, as with any crisis, the impacts will not be evenly distributed. Already we are seeing women and children fleeing their homes without the guarantee of protection, elders and people with disabilities stranded, and people of color de-prioritized in refugee responses.

UUSC is often called to respond to unexpected crises and provide resources to communities whose needs are urgent and access to aid is limited.

Donate to our Emergency Response Fund to ensure UUSC is always ready to provide relief, including our developing work to protect the rights of Ukrainian refugees.

As a result of our response to the Syrian refugee crisis in Eastern Europe, UUSC has strong relationships with refugee rights organizations across the region. One partner, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, is already responding to the current crisis by providing free legal assistance, counseling, and representation, so that Ukrainian asylum seekers receive temporary protection immediately.

Instead of reacting with a one-size-fits-all approach, UUSC takes the time to identify partner organizations on the ground who are best positioned to respond. They know the affected communities and how to address the most pressing needs in a way that leads to an equitable recovery and honors the right to self-determination.

Thank you for your committed support. Please give generously in this time of great need.

    In solidarity,

    Mary Katherine Morn
