Abby and I were proud to attend the Christmas Wreath Dedication at the Michigan War Dog Cemetery. A couple of the pictures are from earlier trips because they came out better. Here is the story-
The War Dog - Military War Dogs have been fighting alongside our men and women in uniform in many of our conflicts. In WWI they were called Ambulance Dogs, they were trained to find wounded soldiers in No-Man’s land after a frontal attack. In WWII they were trained in many disciplines; scout, tracker, sentry and messenger. According to Military records War Dogs saved 15,000 lives during this conflict.
In Korea there were only one War Dog platoon deployed consisting of about 28 dogs. Of those 28 dogs on patrol, thousands of ambushes were averted. Thousands of lives were saved.
Vietnam K9 Memorial Wall
During the Vietnam War 4,234 “War Dogs” were deployed. They had one main mission, to save the lives of our men and women in uniform. They did  their job well, it is estimated they saved over 10,000 lives during this war. As the War was winding down an order came through that all the troops would be pulling out, the troops were ecstatic. All the dog handlers ran to the kennels and hugged their battle buddy and said “Buddy we’re going home”. A few weeks later an order came down from Washington DC to leave the dogs. The handlers couldn’t believe it, however the order stood, sad but true.
The problem was the K9’s were classified as equipment and it was customary when the units are being pulled out and excess equipment is not needed any where else it was left behind. With the dogs being classified as “Equipment” they fell under that rule.
 To honor these well trained K9’s that saved so many lives the Michigan War Dog Memorial erected a Black Granite Wall with all their names and tattoo numbers to recognize them for their service and sacrifice to our country. They will be forever memorized and will “Never be Forgotten”.
Today the War Dog is referred to as Military Working Dog (MWD)
During our visit to pay respects to the dogs who saved so many lives we were overwhelmed by the care and respect this cemetery offers to our faithful servants. We should also thank the dedicated people who maintain the cemetery. Some of the headstones date back to the first World War and carry forward from there. The oldest stones, having been made of Michigan sandstone, eroded over the last century and are difficult to photograph, but an example from 1939 is to the right. We should add that there are police K9 dogs, real service dogs and others who served noble purposes buried here along with the war dogs. All are deserving.

Two engineering students were riding bicycles across a university campus when one  said, "Where did you get the great bike?"

And Finally... Understanding Engineers 8Two engineers were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking at its top. A woman walked by and asked what they were doing
"We're supposed to find the height of this flagpole," said Steve, "but we don't have a ladder."
The woman took a pliers from her purse, loosened a couple of bolts, and laid the pole down on the ground. Then she took a tape measure from her purse, took a measurement, announced, “21 feet," and walked away.
One engineer shook his head and laughed, "A lot of good that does us. We ask for the height and she gives us the length!"
Both engineers have since quit their engineering jobs and have been elected to Congress.

 I received the Remington 1910 catalogue from you today but I am very disappointed with the quality of production. You can easily see from the attached notated image of the piece that the binding is clearly crooked and the cover is surrounded by white. Your quality control is seriously lacking for such a poor piece to emanate from your factory, I expected much better from what I've heard about your company. Hi Abby, I’m looking for a manual for a pre WWII (purchased in 1939) Lyman 48 WJS  Receiver Sight for use on a 1939 Winchester Model 70 (.30 Gov’t ’06), particularly with respect to elevation & windage adjustments. Abby; I came across your publication for shotguns through a couple other forums. I've gotten publications from your group before, and since the listing for the above subject mentioned contacting you, I thought I would. I have an "XLCR" Side-by-Side 12 gauge shotgun that I need to disassemble and repair. This is a "W. Bingham" shotgun, marked "Cleveland" on the receiver. On your website, for the subject listing, you have this called out as "Bingham, W. & Co." Is it worth getting the entire book for the section on the Bingham shotgun? Hi Steve, The quick answer is no. Bingham was a sporting goods dealer between 1880 and 1910 and, as such, they never made guns. What you probably have is a gun purchased from a maker that Bingham had imprinted with their name, much the same way as Sears sold guns. Unfortunately, I have no idea who made them for Bingham. Belgun Assn sold guns under the name Belgun so there are no makers identified. Belgian shotguns were often a cottage industry with individuals making parts that were then assembled into a gun sold by all.

In your description of the book it says that some arms company's are overlooked completely, I have the Uncle Dan Lefever book, and that has lots of good info, always looking for anything that can be added to that. I have nothing on Iver Johnson but would welcome serial number info for older DB shotguns, Hope that helps and thanks for getting back to me, All the best Tracy
 Tracy, Joe Vorisek also wrote Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works, A Short Illustrated History- which should be better for you than his big book. Regarding Lefever, I think Uncle Dan is a better source, but if you buy the IJ book, send along a note and I'll print the Lefever section of the Breechloaders and include it. Hello Gyles, I am sorry to say we aren't shipping to UK through our website. The maze of regulations and requirements that we collect your import duties are, unfortunately, impenetrable. However, many of our publications are available internationally through ebay. They charge and arm and a leg for shipping though. I'm sorry you didn't find the book useful. A couple of things, we just reprint what we are given, we didn't write it or do page numbering, that sort of thing. We also didn't do the research so if the Joe Vorisek didn't know something he wrote UNKNOWN, and Joe is dead so I can't ask him for clarification. The cover isn't faded, we used a technique called "transparency" to make the background go from dark at the top to light atr the bottom. Finally, you can open the book completely flat, you won't hurt the binding so you can read near the gutter with no problems.
Now, because you were VERY DISAPPOINTED (we hate that) I asked Abby to refund your money in full. We do all we can to please people but sometimes things don't work out, I hope you understand. Oh, please keep the book, you may find it useful at some point. Cheers, Rob

I have a Smith & Wesson, model 10-6, 38 caliber revolver. It was issued to me in  October of 1970 when I began my career in law enforcement. The serial number stamped on the butt of the revolver is to the right. Would you be able to provide some history on the handgun. Please advise of any cost for your research. Abby and Rob, While doing some very rare (for me) house cleaning, I discovered the following original Army field manual: FM 23-41, Basic Field Manual: Submachine Gun, Caliber .45, M3 (War Department: 30 October 1943).
The manual itself is of quite small format (about 4” by 8”), but its content of 94 pages is very thorough and comprehensive. I looked at your list of US military field manuals, and it contains a listing for a 4-page field stripping guide for the M3, but nothing on this scale.
It does not contain any sort of reference to the somewhat improved late war version of the weapon, the M3-A1. That omission would have been of little practical consequence during the weapons’ period of usage, as the later improvements were largely just simplifications. I think it’s of some historical documentary significance, however.
As you are likely aware, the M3 submachine gun was nicknamed the “Grease Gun.” Conceived as a much less expensive and easier to produce alternative to the various pre-war and wartime variants of the Thompson submachine gun, the M3 and M3-A1 guns were produced in large numbers during World War II. I can speak from personal experience that while it may have appeared rather crude, the M3 was a very robust and reliable weapon. Production of the M3 ended at the close of WWII, but they remained in widespread use by US forces through the Vietnam War. I remember hearing of their continued presence aboard US naval vessels and by armored vehicle crews well into the 1980s. Significant numbers of them remain scattered throughout the “Third World.”
I don’t recall exactly when or how I acquired this manual. I was, at one point, involved in a project during which I fired all manner of obsolescent US and Soviet man-portable weapons. Maybe I acquired it at that time.
In any case, as my late life interests center on 19th Century weapons, I’ve no practical use for this manual. I do think it’s a significant historical document, though. Would you folks like to have it? I’ve attached a scan of the manual’s table of contents. My asking price is quite fair, I think. For you, it’s free. I just want to find it a home with someone who will appreciate it. You were the first to come to mind. Just let me know one way or the other, and if you want it, I’ll mail it to you. Donald W. Klinko

Dear Sian, I agree, shipping is awful. But this is the story. The UK (EU, Aust and Canada too) decided last summer to force sellers to collect their import duty and taxes then submit reports, etc.. Each country is different and the regulations and applications are impenetrable. Anyway, despite the fact we, as publishers, appear to be exempt from the law we cannot manage to get a permit for our website.
Anyway, our only alternative is to Use Ebay Global Shipping and ship to Ebay in Kentucky where they take over. Ebay then charges you whatever they want, we have no access to their charges. Our shipping program will not allow us to print postage to addresses abroad because we don't have the appropriate licenses from your customs people. I apologize for the ridiculous cost to ship today but there isn't much we can do about it, but if you can find our website I'll send you a pdf for free! Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs

Sian, Of course the piece is of recent printing,1943 refers to wartime vintage of the facilities, even I don't think the War Department would have issued a document about munitions storage entitled "Britain's Biggest Wartime Secret Revealed" during the hostilities.
As I've said repeatedly, we cannot mail to UK using our commercial mail system because we don't have a UK tax authorization number; and we don't stand in line at the PO to mail packages abroad using a personal label to circumvent the UK authorities. My budget is not specific and I tend to buy adverts that I don't already possess, if they are aesthetically pleasing and/or of historical significance. "Twenty five years ago, a friend and I had a book published called "Elegance Borne of Brutality - An Eclectic History of the Football Boot". After marriage(not to each other) and kids and life experience, we're researching for a book on footballs (soccer balls) - "Spheres of Influence". We recently paid $100 dollars for a Crook & Sons (Huddersfield) catalogue as it is possibly the only one in existence. It was shipped from Canada for an additional $30. We've also bought good quality scans of ads for $10. Any ads featuring footballs or football boots would interest us. I hope I'm not being too vague in this response and I hope you can assist us...

2pm: We are terribly busy, orders seem to have exploded in the last few weeks. So, when orders come in we do our best to print, bind, pack and ship as soon as we can. Sometimes we can't get items from one pile to match those in another pile to combine shipping. But good news, Abby managed to get your two together and they went in the mail yesterday. That means you will get a refund of our portion of postage (to Kentucky) where ebay takes over International shipping. Dear Don, I got your email and two phone messages about the Gustaf, thank you. The ad says "glossy soft-cover in full color." The color refers to the cover not in to pages inside, if the insides are in color we note that in the ad as well. Unfortunately, the cover of the Gustaf is gray so the word color is a bit misleading, sorry. If you wish to return it we will refund your $4.95. I am sorry for the misunderstanding. Cheers, Rob

Hi Dion, I'm glad what3words works for you, it should work anywhere on the planet, so the next time you get lost in the south 40 you have that with you... if you have phone service, that is! The bank thing I have no idea about but I'll put it in the next newsletter to see if anyone else has the same thing. You might try Malwarebytes, they seem to pick up oddball stuff like that.
