“Nature and the Sounds of Silence"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Music: Second Sundays: Sue Stone, guitar and voice;
Linda Metzner, piano

As most of you know, I was raised in a predominantly
urban environment. My rural friends, every now and then, remind me that I am a "city boy." I've come a long way from the streets of Baltimore and New York and have become quite appreciative and extremely comfortable in my new environs here in North Carolina these many years.

I'd like to share with you some lessons I've learned while living so near the woods and in nature on the topic of, Nature and the Sounds of Silence. Hint: It's been mostly about the “L” Word… listening. Hope you can join us.

Sue Stone is our Second Sundays performer for February 13, 2022. Sue says, "Music has been a part of my life since the beginning -
piano since starting lessons at age 7, singing in choirs and community choruses, teaching myself guitar at 35, singing for church and community events and leading sing-alongs at nursing homes. I even took a detour into mountain dulcimer when I lived in Arkansas. I live in an ecovillage, and love the mountains, gardening and bird-watching."  Sue has been a volunteer
pianist at the UUCSV, providing her beautiful music for many years!

Mask Mandate Update - Extension through February 16, 2022

Citing the recent increase of positive COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners voted to extend the mask requirement in indoor public spaces through Wednesday, February 16, 2022. It also extends to Asheville, Biltmore Forest, Black Mountain, Weaverville and Woodfin.

11:00 a.m. - Valentine take-home pick-up
12:00 p.m. - RE Story Time
1:30 p.m. - Online Valentine’s Day bingo!
Susan Enwright Hicks, RE Director

Greetings RE families,

Please note that on February 13, 2022, there will be no formal RE lesson at 11:00 a.m. Susan will be on hand to distribute Valentine’s Activity bags to families who would like them and can provide care/supervised playground play if needed. Valentine bags will be available Sunday, February 13, 2022, or by special arrangement (contact Susan if you can’t make it on Sunday).
Susan will have a Zoom RE Storytime/worship based on the books This Is Not A Valentine and Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch at noon. Both stories provide examples of the kind of real acts of love and care we can provide to friends and neighbors if we pay attention with an eye to really seeing and
appreciating those around us. At 1:30 p.m., Susan will host an online Bingo game (bingo cards are part of this year’s Valentine take-home bags). Families will need some pennies, or other small markers to play (Zoom links below).
Here are links families may use to watch the stories on their own if they wish:

“John Brown"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

John Brown was charismatic, inspiring, confounding,
courageous, mysterious, intimidating, given to religious
zealotry and even at times a bit boring. Harriet Tubman met John Brown in Canada in 1858. He nicknamed her “General” Tubman because of her impressive skills in leading escaped slaves to freedom. Brown told her about his plans to create a slave uprising and
requested her help. Had she not fallen ill in the fall of 1859, she may have been convinced to accompany Brown on the Harpers Ferry raid and may have thus added martyrdom to her legend as The Moses of African Americans. Frederick Douglass, also a friend to John Brown, decided not to accompany Brown and his little group to Harpers Ferry, VA, those ill-fated days of October 16-18, 1959. Let's explore the life and legacy of John Brown, a willing ally in the struggle to free America's enslaved population in those pivotal years before the Civil War... by any means necessary.
News from UUCSV Groups & Committees
UUCSV Receives Largest-ever Financial Gift

Phil Fryberger, a founding member of UUCSV, died recently after an
extended battle with cancer. His love of our congregation, and of the music program in particular, led him to designate UUCSV as the beneficiary of two retirement funds from his former employer, TIAA and CREF. The $41,394 contribution is the largest donation ever received in our 22-year history.

To honor Phil’s love of music, the Board of Trustees intends to establish the Phillip C. Fryberger Endowment Fund, whose earnings will be used to
enhance our music program in perpetuity. This fund is a fitting and lasting legacy. It also is our belief that Phil would be proud of how we forever
remember him.

In 2000, with the encouragement of the Asheville UU Congregation, Phil worked diligently with a small group of pioneers to establish our liberal,
religious congregation here in Black Mountain. He frequently shared his love of music at Sunday services, playing from a wide repertoire of songs on
keyboards without any sheet music. His career, however, was in financial
services, and when he joined TIAA he relocated to work out of their Charlotte offices; then he moved on to the company headquarters in New Jersey. When he returned for family visits, however, there were always stories and songs to be shared.

As soon as he retired, Phil returned to the Swannanoa Valley—but cancer cut short his plans and he passed away in October. Bill Altork, a fellow UU
musician who chronicled the remarkable green burial orchestrated by Dawn Wilson, family, and friends, has described that event, showing a caring
community of human beings experiencing something real, moving, and unifying.

With gratitude, we salute and thank Phil for his planned gift made with love to UUCSV.

Lee Reading, Treasurer
February 2022

NOTE: The following is a memory of Phil from someone who only "met" him once.

Thank you for sharing the news about Phil Fryberger’s generous gift to the Congregation. I only “met” Phil once, last fall at UUCSV. He was playing the piano before the Sunday service. Members who came in greeted Phil and
applauded when he finished. He made a half-humorous comment about how
he looked and his plan to play at open mic night at the White Horse. Everyone was smiling but the room was silent. At first, I thought it was out of respect for a friend and talented musician. Then, I sensed the moisture on people's faces. It was collective love.

Thank all of you,
David Folsom

Access to the UU

To enhance the safety and security of those who attend UUCSV, the Building & Grounds Committee has been asked by the Board to periodically update the key code, which provides access to a set of building keys.

Building & Grounds will update the key code on a quarterly basis, with the next change being February 28, 2022. Here is a list of those who are eligible to receive the key code:
  • Board of Trustees
  • Building & Grounds Committee members
  • Committee Chairs
  • Choir Director
We recognize that individuals, other than those listed above, may require
access to the building, such as those who sign up to clean.  It will be the
responsibility of the Building & Grounds Committee and Committee Chairs to coordinate their access, which may include giving them the key code.

Please direct all questions to Deb Evenchik (615.351.4364).

Grief Workshop

Grief is natural, unpleasant, conflicting, normal and powerful! Grief is a part of living. Yet, as a culture, we are generally ineffective in dealing with grief.

Given enough interest, the Congregational Care Committee will sponsor a
series of seminars exploring grief and ways of responding to its demands. Indicate your interest in attending such a series by signing the sheet in the UUCSV lobby or by calling Larry Pearlman at 602-501-8471.

Would you like to be part of something GREAT?

No, this isn't an advertisement for Amway or Mary Kay (although those are great companies). This is about YOUR UUCSV Auction! The auction may be 10 months away, but now is the time when the planning starts. If you would like to be a part of this successful and FUN fundraiser, please contact Larry Pearlman at larryRpearlman42@gmail.com

No specific expertise is needed. We need everything from food planning,
logistics, computer skills, solicitors, entertainment and more. I'm putting
together our planning group and would love to have you join us.

Afghan Refugee Project Update - Circle of Welcome

A Circle of Welcome has been formed in our congregation to assist an Afghan family to resettle here in cooperation with Lutheran Services of Asheville. The family consists of a young couple with their 10-month-old daughter. They are now living in an apartment owned by Jane Carroll and David Reid.

In spite of all the challenges they have been facing, the family is gradually
adjusting to life in the Swannanoa Valley. With the help of volunteers, they have enjoyed walks around Owen Lake and shopping at Ingles. Thanks to transportation provided by St. James Episcopal and Black Mountain Presbyterian churches, they plan to attend prayers at the Islamic Center each Friday. The adults are very pleased to have English lessons and practice
every day. The baby has two teeth, weighs 18 pounds and is growing fast! Plans for the future include enrollment in Medicaid, acquiring Social Security cards, obtaining drivers' licenses and helping the man of the family find employment.

We're pleased to report that our Circle of Welcome now includes 27 members who have helped with transportation, shopping, laundry, language tutoring and donating items for the family's needs. Lutheran Services has received a huge amount of clothing donations which are in the process of being sorted and distributed. Donations currently welcomed are gift cards for Ingles, Walmart and Target. Also, please let us know if you know of any source of
traditional Muslim women's clothing.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed in any way to making this family part of our community. We'll keep everyone posted on developments and further needs. If you're interested in getting involved, please contact:

Anna Marcel de Hermanas (annamdeh@gmail.com
Katherine Tharp (katherinet@gmail.com).

Call to Action - Bounty & Soul Healthy Food Drive

Throughout the month of February, Bounty & Soul is sponsoring a healthy food drive, to bulk up their market boxes during the leaner season when local foods are less abundant. Think nourishing, shelf-stable foods like quinoa, beans, brown rice and low-sodium canned veggies. You will see a box in the Portico that you can leave your donated food in on February 13, 2022, and February 20, 2022. Thank you for your help!
