“It's Sunday Morning; Why Are You Here?"
Eric Thomas & Helen Wolfson

Music: Helen Wolfson & Eric Thomas; Sue Stone, Piano

Today, more Americans than ever identify as religiously unaffiliated. What is it about Unitarian Universalism that
compels theists and non-theists alike to show up at a church-like place (church, fellowship, society, you name it)
instead of staying home, relaxing, reading the paper or
engaging in any number of other competing possibilities?

Eric Thomas has been playing guitar since 1965. He began by playing the Rock ’n Roll, Rhythm ’n Blues, and “Beach Music” tunes that were popular in the mid and late ’60’s. More recently, his collaboration with Helen Wolfson has launched him into the world of Celtic music, lyrical waltzes, and other music that he never imagined he would play.

Helen began playing the hammered dulcimer in 1993. Her initial, fairly traditional hammered dulcimer repertoire has been greatly enriched by her collaboration with Eric. She is also certified by the Music for Healing and Transition Program(TM) as a Music Practitioner(R) and plays therapeutic
music at bedside for people in physical or emotional pain.

The RE Committee is seeking several new members! If you have been a known member or friend of UUCSV for at least six months and have an
interest in helping to craft future programs for children and youth please contact Susan Enwright Hicks, DRE (828-450-5319) for more information. We hope to have our first committee meeting of 2022 in early spring.

*Due to recent Covid surges Susan and the Board have determined it is

“Nature and the Sounds of Silence"
Rev. Michael J S Carter

As most of you know, I was raised in a predominantly urban environment. My rural friends, every now and then, remind me that I am a "city boy." I've come a long way from the streets of Baltimore and New York and have become quite appreciative and extremely comfortable in my new environs here in North Carolina these many years.

I'd like to share with you some lessons I've learned while living so near the woods and in nature on the topic of, Nature and the Sounds of Silence. Hint: It's been mostly about the “L” Word--- listening. Hope you can join us.

Grief Workshop

Grief is natural, unpleasant, conflicting, normal and powerful! Grief is a part of living. Yet, as a culture, we are generally ineffective in dealing with grief.

Given enough interest, the Congregational Care Committee will sponsor a
series of seminars exploring grief and ways of responding to its demands. Indicate your interest in attending such a series by signing the sheet in the UUCSV lobby or by calling Larry Pearlman at 602-501-8471.

Would you like to be part of something GREAT?

No, this isn't an advertisement for Amway or Mary Kay (although those are great companies). This is about YOUR UUCSV Auction! The auction may be 10 months away, but now is the time when the planning starts. If you would like to be a part of this successful and FUN fundraiser, please contact Larry Pearlman at larryRpearlman42@gmail.com

No specific expertise is needed. We need everything from food planning,
logistics, computer skills, solicitors, entertainment and more. I'm putting
together our planning group and would love to have you join me.

MLK February Event to be Postponed

We just found out the airing and recording of the event will be postponed due to COVID complications. More info to follow but we think it will be sometime in March.  Thank you.

Social Action Committee Announcement
Afghan Refugee Circle of Welcome

Thanks to everyone who donated items and funds to the new Americans
arriving in our community.  UUCSV is providing a "Circle of Welcome" to a young couple with a 9-month-old child.  We have 20 people signed up to help (thank you for signing up). Please send your contact information and ways you are willing to help if you still want to join the Circle to the following Social Action Committee members:

Katherine - katherinet@gmail.com Cell: 228-233-6041
Anna - Cell: 740-706-3793

UPDATE: Afghan families placed in temporary housing (like the family at Jane and David's) will need to find permanent housing in the next few months.  If you or someone you know has rentals and would be willing to
negotiate rent and/or work/rent agreements, please notify Katherine or Anna.  Families have a small monthly stipend and are able to work at jobs that don't require much English.

We ask that all Circle of Welcome members be fully vaccinated.  The new Americans have all been vaccinated except for the young children.

Inanna's Daughters

Inanna's Daughters is a women's gathering with Goddess and Earth-centered themes.  This cross-quarter day, Imbolc or Brigid's Day, we will celebrate on Zoom due to cold weather and COVID. The date is Sunday, February 6, 2022, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. All women are very welcome. In honor of Brigid, an ancient Irish Goddess and saint, we will offer readings, songs and the making of Brigid's crosses among other things.

Contact Linda Metzner at annelinde@hotmail.com for more information and the opportunity to contribute to the gathering.  The Zoom link is below.

BEFORE YOU RECYCLE ALL THOSE CHRISTMAS CARD ENVELOPES...
SAVE YOUR STAMPS FOR RIGHT SHARING OF WORLD RESOURCES (RSWR).

This is a major fundraiser for this wonderful organization.

Maggie Moon O'Neill has placed a box for stamp collection in the foyer, on the side table, near the nametags laid out for visitors. She has also posted guidelines for saving stamps next to the box.  Maggie will collect and mail the stamps to RSWR periodically.

Right Sharing of World Resources (RSWR) is an independent Quaker not-for-profit organization that gives grants to groups of marginalized women in Kenya, Sierra Leone and India to fund individual micro-enterprise projects.

Right Sharing’s work is grounded in a sense of stewardship for the world’s material, human and spiritual resources.

Maggie and Al's son, Jon Watts, is currently visiting these projects in Africa and India to create a film about the women who receive funding from RSWR.

Since 1996, the Quaker Missions Stamp Project has collected and sold used postage stamps and used the proceeds to fund this work. From 2009-2017, over $11,000 for Right Sharing was raised from the sale of stamps.

The stamp program accepts stamps of all issue dates and countries, both used and unused stamps, sheets of stamps, albums, boxed collections of stamps, envelopes, and postcards.

Please see specific guidelines posted in the foyer of the church or check the website at https://rswr.org/stamp-program.

If you are not attending church in person, you may drop stamps off for Maggie at her home in Black Mountain. Give her a call or text to let her know you are coming by and she will give you the address.
