“On Caring”
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Music:  Annelinde Metzner, piano

Out of solitude comes the need for care, and all genuine spiritual and humanistic paths are one and the same, to me. What many human beings like to see is care and change.  Many do not see (nor do they want to) the care, the participation in the pain, the solidarity in suffering and the sharing in the experience of the broken. Perhaps this is why Dr. King had to remind us that real caring is sometimes more than just tossing a coin at someone who is begging for money. I would like to take the time this Sunday to explore what it means to actually care. I trust you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving Holiday. Let us continue on with the journey together!

Happy Thanksgiving!

There will be no virtual RE this week. Below are two links to story read-alongs families can enjoy on their own; both are renditions of the song “Over The River and Through The Wood” which was originally titled “A boy’s Thanksgiving Day” and written by Unitarian, Lydia Maria Child.

Lydia Maria Child (née Francis; February 11, 1802 – October 20, 1880), was an American abolitionistwomen's rights activist, Native American rights
activist, novelist, journalist and opponent of American expansionism.
You can read more about this extraordinary woman here.

Following are the stories:
This version includes more traditional lyrics with sweet illustrations by Emma Randall.

A cute modern reinterpretation by Linda Ashman (ill. by Kim Smith) can be found here.

Wishing everyone safe travels, and a wonderful weekend!

“Community As Communion”
Pam King

Nourishing environments don’t just happen.  Each of us has the opportunity to contribute to the local culture that feeds the common good and the individual spirit.  We’ll explore what each of us must ask ourselves: “What is mine to do?” in our special corner of this earth.  Our contributions are more than a list of chores or obligations, however.  Our contributions to our
community are gifts to be valued and revered as the treasures they are.  Large or small, public or private, all our efforts toward building a positive community spirit create a space for satisfying our spiritual hunger.

Pam King is an eight year resident of Black Mountain, currently serving as a member of the Town Council.  She is also the Development Director for Helpmate, Buncombe County’s domestic violence advocacy organization.  Pam has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Florida and a Master’s degree in Religious Education from Loyola University, New Orleans. She has three sons, five grandchildren, and two cats, Ruth Bader Ginsburg & Nancy Pelosi.

A Word From Your Caring Committee

We all have full lives AND we all love our friends, so let's remember them when they are not quite in our field of vision anymore. I'm thinking particularly of Jennifer Atkinson. Now that Jennifer has moved into the Mountain Ridge Health and Rehab Center at 611 Old US Hywy 70 in the Ridgecrest area and doesn't come to church anymore, I know she would love visits, calls and cards from her UU friends.  You might even consider taking her out for coffee or ice cream (she LOVES chocolate ice cream!).

Her new phone number is 828-669-5559.  She has no voicemail and if there is not an answer after 6-7 rings, please try again later.  She still loves her UU family!

Bridging the Divide Workshop - November 30, 2021

When conversing with someone on the ‘other side of the divide, how can we best listen and understand without arguing and find common ground based on shared values and humanity? Can we rebuild trust, clarify disagreements, and provide safe places for deeper understanding?

Braver Angels is a grass-roots organization that provides workshops to
enhance such opportunities and skills. Sponsored by the AAUW, the public is invited to participate in the “Bridging the Divide Workshop” with Braver Angels on November 30, 2021 from 6:30-8:15 PM. Offered free of charge to the
public, Braver Angels uses Eventbrite for all their programs and has created a registration page for the November event that can be found here.

The registration page provides a description of the program. For inquiries, contact Johanna Manasse at jvm795@gmail.com or call 708.224.7199.

Continuing Education Webinar Series - November 30, December 7 & December 14, 2021 - 2:00-4:30 pm EST

Subject: Spiral of Transformative Change (registration link can be found here)

UUCSV is a member of Faith Communities Organizing for Sanctuary (FCOS) and is offering this important training on racial equity.  Please consider attending.

One of the commitments of FCOS is continued education for accountability and the deeply important and ongoing work of dismantling white supremacy. We are thrilled to be able to learn from our local leaders, Marisol Jiménez & Tamiko Ambrose. Spiral of Transformative Change is a webinar series, in which we will gain a foundational understanding of structural racism and racial equity work; apply a trauma and equity lens to group dynamics and
accountability practices; and discover meaningful steps to take on the spiral path of transformative change.

Jiménez and Ambrose remind us that none of us are going to “workshop our way out of structural racism”, but [they] firmly believe shared frameworks and language are a foundation upon which individuals and organizations can
begin building their strategies and actions. It is one step of many we must all commit to undertake in our collective work to dismantle structures of racism and oppression in our lifetimes.

The training will be offered at a Solidarity Rate of $100. We invite you to
consider paying the full price of $150, which will sponsor seats for those who need assistance. Click on the form, enter your name and then click the
second form that appears after you submit your name. This will take you to the payment page (a sliding scale is available). Please reach out personally to people in your community that would benefit from this webinar. We'd love to send 40 people from the organizations and faith communities connected to FCOS.

Collection Drive on December 5 & 12, 2021
Benefiting The Afghan Refugee Project

The Social Action committee is sponsoring a collection drive for the inbound Afghan refugees who are arriving in Asheville. The local sponsor, Catholic Charities of Asheville, has identified some items that we can provide through Homeward Bound (Catholic Charities is not able to facilitate the distribution of the donations).

Items needed include:
  • Dish towels & oven mitts
  • Trash cans, mops and brooms
  • Pots, pans and serving utensils
  • Coffee maker and mugs
  • Air mattresses, sheets and blankets (twin, full and queen)
  • Towels and shower curtains/liners
In addition, we will accept monetary donations and gift cards for groceries and restaurants (please consider culturally appropriate restaurants such as Baba Nahm, Kathmandu, etc.) on December 5 & 12, 2021 (in a second
offering basket). Checks can be made directly to Catholic Charities Asheville with "Afghan Refugee Project" noted on the check.

If you have other resources you wish to donate, please contact Anna Marcel de Hermanas at 740-706-3793.

 From the Social Action Committee:

Our Land Acknowledgement sign is now posted, and a Land Acknowledgement statement will be read at the beginning of most services.

Here are some timely resources from the UU Justice NC Leaders' Weekly:

Reflecting On and Reframing Thanksgiving
  • Rethinking Thanksgiving Toolkit:  Developed by the Indigenous Solidarity Network. This toolkit was primarily developed to help white people discuss Thanksgiving with family, friends, and communities but many of the resources may be helpful to people of other racial identities as well as multi-racial communities.
  • Practicing Land Acknowledgements When we begin gatherings with a Land Acknowledgement we recognize the Indigenous inhabitants of the land on which we live. Here is a guide to land acknowledgements and a short video on the importance of this practice. You can use this link to identify the Native land you reside on.
