Seasonal/Halloween Listening Fun Ideas
How to be Inclusive in your classroom:
I love Halloween - as do many, many kids! But not every student in your school celebrates the occasion. To be inclusive, we offer both spooky options and Halloween options on Musicplayonline.
In this newsletter, I'm going to share some of my favorite activities for October, with options.
Fossils - From Carnival of the Animals
Part of the fun at Halloween is dramatizing and dressing up. In this activity, the kids are divided into two groups - the Fossils and the security guards. This is much like the plot line of the movie, Night at the Museum. When the security guards doze off, the fossils start to play! They move to the music like fossils might during the theme or A section. At the end of the A section, they "hear" the guards coming, so freeze!
During the B section, the Security guards look through the museum to figure out what the noise was about. The fossils all look like fossils, so at the end of the B section (then the C) the guards go back to their station and go back to sleep.
The intro video to 'Fossils' is fun too!
In the A section, the fossils are exploring the museum

In the B and C sections security is investigating.

We have great worksheets for all of the Carnival of the Animals selections. This is the Fossils worksheet page. There's guided printing to learn the term rondo form, and it's illustrated.
Instruments used are also illustrated.
In the Hall of the Mountain King
The second listening selection that I love is "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg. You'll find this on Musicplayonline in the General Section-In the Hall
It's kind of in the middle of the modules in General

I start this lesson by having students think up ways they could vary this rhythm.
start p and crescendo
start slow and accel
clap ti-ti, pat or stomp ta
Start f and decrescendo
start fast and rit.
Bar 1-2 solo / bar 3-4 class
Crescendo, then decrescendo
- Tell the students that Edvard Grieg used this pattern in a piece and he created 18 variations!
- have kids number paper 1-18. Listen to the work, and write short notes about what they heard
Movement: We do a super fun movement activity.
Divide the class into 18 groups. #1 starts, by doing Head and Shoulders to the music.
Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes, knees and toes.
Head and shoulders, knees and toes, eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
#2 adds on - continue till all students are doing the movement.
Ending:
No more! No more!
Head and shoulders, knees and toes
No more! No more!
Head and shoulders, knees and toes
No more! No more! No-no-no-no-no-no-no-no
Roll arms up and throw over your head.
SO Much Fun!
This is one where it's a lot easier to watch the video than to explain.
Come to the webinar on Wednesday!
Extensions!
Play Sevens with the music! Again - video or join me on webinar will be better than trying to follow written instructions.
Dana Herro sent us a link to this fun activity with the piece - Binder or Foler Movement.
And we have a video about Edvard Grieg and about Peer Gynt Suite to help put the piece of music into context.
Seasonal Storybooks for Music Classes
In addition to fun Movement activities, in this webinar I'll be sharing some suggested storybooks for Halloween or Fall!
I hope that all the webinars are helpful!
We are using new Zoom software to keep out Zoom Bombers. It's easy to access - just one click.
You'll be able to put your "hand up" if you want to actively participate.
If you just want to watch, that's OK too.
We also post webinars on Musicplayonine in the Dashboard-Webinars.
