“Sly As A FOX”
Rev. Michael J S Carter

At the outset I, want to say that I do try to stay
informed as a citizen as to what is going on in my country. I must also say that my desire to stay
informed also conflicts at times with my desire to stay sane (at least what I consider sane, for myself). This means I also take breaks from time-to-time regarding what I let into my consciousness from the news media.

As cynical as this may sound, I do realize that in my quest to stay
informed, I am also being misinformed. The mere fact that most of the
major news channels are run by corporations, and that they all have the same “top stories” each and every day is suspicious at best. I mean, what are the chances of this happening every day? I get it. Please indulge me this Sunday if you can find it in your heart. There is one news station that I must rant against. Yes, it's political sermon. I just ask for a few minutes of your time… actually, 20 minutes.

Message from the Minister

It is with a deep sadness that I must tell you that a founding member of this congregation has made his transition. Phil Fryberger left this earthly existence on Tuesday, October 19th, 2021. It goes without saying that his energy, his mercurial mind, his sense of humor and irony, will be deeply missed.

As of this time there is no more information that I can give you
regarding a memorial service, or even if we will have one. Please keep Phil and his family in your thoughts, meditations, and prayers as we go forward.

" He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again."                               --Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 2

" Good night sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."
    -- Hamlet, Act 5, Scene 2

The rest is Silence.

An RE Invitation to come carve a pumpkin or do crafts at UUCSV on Sunday, October 24th

All RE children are invited to come carve a pumpkin, play on the playground, and/or work on a collaborative piece of art for the auction on Sunday, October 24th from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Please BYO pumpkin if possible, and if you have carving tools to share, please label them. Parents who’d like to go into the service may do so after having a conversation about what tools the children may use without an adult’s help.

If your child would like to help make the auction item, but you are not interested in in-person meetings at this time, please call Susan (828) 450-5319, and we can get your family the needed materials.  Thanks!

“The Celtic Celebration of Samhain”
Peggy Moore

On the Celtic day of Samhain, the final celebration of harvest, the end of the traditional Celtic year, we open the door to winter and to our own inner darkness. We are at a time where the veils between this world and the
Otherworld are thin. Our ancestors call us to look into the darkness and face our shadow-side, release our regrets and burn away all that we need to release. The clearing and the burning can help us heal and prepare us for the birth of our Light within, celebrated at the winter solstice.

Peggy Moore has been a life-long student of metaphysics, spirituality, and religions. She studied the pre-Celtic, old Irish ways with an Irish medicine woman. Personal pilgrimages, as well as leading formal tours to mounds, standing stones, and sacred sites of Ireland, Wales, and Egypt, have informed and expanded her energy work, healing practices, and teaching. Her connection with the Earth called her toward Celtic Spirituality and throughout the year she leads ceremony for the Eightfold Celtic Holy Days and the Irish Spirit Wheel.

News from UUCSV Groups & Committees

Sunday, October 31st,
Inanna's Daughters, a women's group exploring the Divine Feminine,
meets 4 times a year. Join us for Samhain on Halloween, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. out in the grassy area beside the UUCSV.  We will circle outdoors if the weather is good. Bring your own camp chair. Facilitated by Rebecca Williams and Annelinde Metzner.

Building & Grounds Committee - Seeking Volunteers!

It is once again time to ask for volunteers to help the Building & Grounds Committee gather and mulch leaves around the building. We have selected the dates of October 23rd, November 6th and November 20th to accomplish this task. One enhancement this year, is our intention to build 2 leaf compost bins. In the spring, we will use the leaf compost for garden areas around the building.

Work begins around 9:00 am on the dates shown above. If you are able to help us, please contact Deb Evenchik at (615) 351-4364, and let her know which date or dates you are available. Your help is greatly appreciated!

REMINDER - YOUTUBE CHANNEL SERVICE ARCHIVE

There seems to be a bit of confusion about where to find the YouTube
channel that houses the archive of current (and previous) UUCSV services.  It is always published in the Current in the OOS section at the top.  Following is the link and I recommend creating a bookmark in your browser so it's easy to find for future reference: Click on this link below.

RE Committee - Seeking New Members!

The RE Committee is seeking new members. If you have been affiliated with UUCSV for at least six months, have an interest in working with the DRE to help support Religious Education for ages 0-18 and would like to be considered for a place on our committee, please contact Susan Enwright Hicks at redirector.uusv@gmail.com. We especially welcome those who bring unique perspectives in terms of race, family dynamics, orientation or abilities.

UUSV Auction Committee Update

Have you noticed the thermometer when you go past the greeters? That's tracking how many items have been donated for our auction through you and our business community. Our goal this year is 250, and I'm told that I'm
optimistic, BUT I have great faith in you. Let's blow right by that goal!

With Love & Appreciation, Larry

The UUCSV Choir is looking for new members!

We sing a wide variety of music from many genres.  Reading music is helpful but not necessary.  We are now meeting live twice, and then recording the 2 songs a month on Zoom to be shown on the fourth Sunday each month.   We are a friendly bunch!  We can help you with the recording process-  you just need a smart phone with a Voice Memo app.   Contact director Linda Metzner at annelinde@hotmail.com.

Tidings - November

"Thank you!" That's our Tidings topic for the month of November. Going along with the Thanksgiving season, our topic is Gratitude. Not just the little things around our lives, but the really important ones...just name one that's made a big difference in your life. For many of us, UUCSV has influenced us in a lot of ways. Send your submissions of essays, photos or poetry to the editor, Barb Rogers, by October 25th!  Thank you!
