Easy Assessments for K-5 Music Classes

What to Assess?
You need to view your districts curriculum and scope and sequence, and choose 3-4 outcomes to assess each term.  What does your report card look like?  If your report only allows you to report on 3 outcomes, choose them carefully!

I feel that the most important outcomes in my classes are ability to keep a steady beat, and ability to sing in tune.  In this newsletter, and in the webinar, I'll be giving ideas for assessing the following:
  1. Sing - match pitch
  2. Steady beat – non-locomotor
  3. Steady beat - tap, move
  4. Play steady beat
  5. Reads Rhythm
  6. Plays Instrument correctly
  7. Timbre – voices, rhythm instruments
Here are 8 activities you can use for pitch matching.

1.Hello Attendance – Hello Sara. Hello Mrs. Gagne

2.Improvise Question/Answer – What kind of costume do you like?
- I sing the question to the students on so-mi, la-so-mi, mi-re-do, or do-re-mi-so-la.
- the student improvises an answer back to me.

3.Sing to Melody the Elephant
Melody is a stuffed elephant toy.  If the children use their singing voice, Melody will do what they request.  eg.  Melody jump up and down.  If they sing, Melody jumps!

4.Echo Bobo
Bobo is a tennis ball with a funny face.
Bobo sings melodic patterns to the children on the syllable "bo" and the children sing back.
For assessment, invite individual students to sing back.

5.Name Games

– Concentration, Number Concentration, Jolly Rhythm are fun name games, and all offer opportunities for students to sing alone.

6.Guessing Games

– Doggie Doggie, Mr. Potato Head,Who Has the Pencil, are great guessing games that encourage solo singing. I keep track of who has had turns by assessing pitch matching.

7.Call and Response songs

– In call and response songs, you can have children sing response alone – Fastest Turkey is a fun Thanksgiving singing game (like Charlie Over the Ocean) and I use this for assessing pitch matching.

8.Sing a phrase of a song alone

– This graphic is from the beat and rhythm interactive activities for Engine #9.  You can assign line 1 as a solo, line 2-class line 3 - new solo, line 4 - class. All students point to the beat as the song is sung.  This helps them develop audiation or "inner hearing" as they hear the solo, but don't sing themselves.  This beat chart allows you to "turn off" some of the beats, and that becomes a fun game for kids - it's like a 'leave out' song!

This activity is available for 150 simple reading songs on Musicplayonline!

You can use rubrics to assess pitch matching.

Assess – Steady Beat with non-locomotor movement

1.Use an action or movement song – observe the movement
Time for Music!  Elephants Have Wrinkles  Shake it!

2. Play Copycat with a short classical example
Listening Kit 1, #36

3. Rhythm Practice Section – Prepare Rhythm – Move to the Beat (more will be created!)

This beat and rhythm assessment checklist is available for all grades on Musicplayonline.com.
Go to Lesson Planning and select the grade.  Download Rhythm Reading Assessment.

Assess – Steady Beat with  locomotor movement

1.Observe students as they sing and move to a movement song:
Hey Betty Martin, Hop Old Squirrel, Choo Choo Train, Engine #9
Snail Snail, - any song where they move - walk, hop, stomp, tiptoe.

2.  Play follow the leader with a piece of classical music.  Find one with a strong, steady beat, about 120 BPM.  On Musicplayonline, Listen 1 #36, 37, 38, 42 would all be good for this activity.

Assess – Rhythm Reading

1.Read Rhythm Patterns in Rhythm Practice Section
Flashcards are in Levels 4-12a and will be in more sections soon!

2.Rhythm Practice – Rhythm Reading Assessment – great to assess a whole class in just 3-4 minutes.

3.Read the rhythm of a song!

4.Do Rhythm Play Along with instruments - Instrument section-Unpitched

Assess – Instrument Playing Ability

1.Observe as students play unpitched
Instruments-Unpitched-Play, Play, Play Along; Piano Roll

2.Observe as students play on barred instruments
PK-K-1 play a solid bordun with a simple reading song – Counting Song.
2-3-4-5 play a part of an Orff arrangement – Gr 2 Time to Play
- Gr 3: Rocky Mountain

Assess – Timbre

- #7 This is my Speaking Voice.    – use 4 Voice Interactive/printable

2.Mystery Box – do aurally with littles, do a written assessment with older students
- put a variety of unpitched instruments in the box.
- play an instrument and invite students to identify what you played

What Instrument Did You Hear?  Game – use to Assess
