President's Message
Scotty Walker
LMEA President

Let me begin, by thanking all of you for the opportunity to serve you during these extraordinary times.  Amid all the uncertainties of the upcoming school year, the one certainty I have in my heart, is that together we will do what is best for our students.  But the way we do it, may include a great deal of experimentation and adaptation.  LMEA consists of incredibly talented educators who time and again have weathered difficulty days.  We can do this.

Across our nation, music educators and their respective associations are thinking and planning.  Our LMEA Board has had multiple meetings to discuss a path forward.  We recognize that we are planning while dealing with many unknowns.  In Louisiana, the manner in which we return to a relatively normal teaching pattern, will be slow, bumpy, and to some extent unpredictable.

It is imperative to plan for a variety of scenarios, knowing we must also be compliant with various guidelines that will be imposed by the federal, state, and local authorities.  To some extent, what we do, will be guided by administrators and leaders who themselves are fenced-in by a variety of mandates.

The LMEA Board of Directors is proceeding with parallel visions of how our events such as all-state, conference, and assessments may take place.  While we are setting in motion all the logistical plans for a school year that may be similar to what we have done in the past, we are also taking into account that we will likely have to make adjustments in response to the evolving situation.  As a result, we are developing numerous contingency plans.

As we proceed through the summer, the LMEA Board will communicate with our members through newsletters, the LMEA website, the LMEA Facebook page, and our District Directors/Division Chairs.  It is imperative that we remain both united and flexible during this challenging time.

We are also working diligently to assemble an advocacy committee made up of representatives from across the state to ensure that our collective voice is heard at all levels.  Likewise, we will be developing a resources section on our website, to assist you in addressing distance learning.

Stay strong.  Keep the faith.  Stay safe.

President Elect Message
Brett Babineaux
LMEA President Elect
Greetings everyone!  I hope everyone is safe and well.  I feel like quoting Charles Dickens, but there seems to be no correct words to describe what we are going through right now and certainly nothing can prepare us for an uncertain future.  There are a few things we know and a lot of things we don’t know.

Here is what I know.  The board is meeting and discussing current and future issues that are important to all of us, especially issues dealing with Covid-19 and its effect on music education.  We are aware of the many things that we don't know yet and are anxious to know what our policy makers will decide so that we can formulate a plan.  As the new President-elect, I am honored and excited to work in this capacity on such important and vital issues.  We are energized and steadfast in our desire to help everyone through these times.  Please frequent our website along with NAfME and NAMM.  There is, and will continue to be, growing information regarding Online Learning resources, Instrument Cleaning Guidelines, Webinars, end-of-school recommendations, back-to-school guidelines, etc.

We also look forward to the possibility of our inaugural Robert L. Wilhite Award of Excellence and the Standard of Excellence Award Please look for that information on the LMEA website.  Information regarding the State Solo Assessment is available as well.  Although there are things we don’t know yet, we know that we have things to look forward to next year and that LMEA is eager to play a part in what that looks like.   Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

LMEA Calendar of Events for 2020-2021

We will be revising the manner in which our annual calendar of LMEA events will be constructed and formatted.  It will become a "live" calendar that will be housed on the LMEA website. This will allow our District Directors more flexibility, as this year's events may be revised multiple times during the course of this academic year.

Concert Band Adjudication Training

LMEA will begin Concert Band Adjudication Training in the upcoming year. The training will encompass both concert and sight-reading adjudication. The initial training is tentatively planed to be given during our 2020 Annual State Music Conference.  The training session will be approximately two hours.  There will not be a fee assessed to members for this training. An application form will be developed and placed on the LMEA website.

Elementary Division Updates
Michele White
Chairman
Our main clinician for LMEA 2020 is Jo Kirk.  She has four amazing sessions planned for us, all of which will be useful, joyful, and wonderful.

Our secondary clinician is Kurt Cereske.  Kurt comes highly recommended from our Louisiana-born-and-bred friend, Dr Susan Brumfield.  I will share his and Mrs Kirk’s sessions in the September LMEA magazine.

I encourage you to submit a session proposal for this November’s conference.  The deadline for proposals is June 10.  The application form is on the LMEA website and is very user-friendly.  Last year there were only three proposals.  Usually there are at least eight to ten from which to choose, and some years there are even more.  Please seriously consider some of the incredible lessons, concepts, philosophies, ideas, etc. that you (or you and your colleagues) use to excite your students as they learn, create, and respond, and share them with us.

I wish you the very, very best as we work through the COVID-19 pandemic together.  I know your music students are missing you and the wonderful blessing you are as their teacher.  Please remember how important you are to your schools and communities and to your children.  Thank you for all you do to inspire your students.  Claim a blessed day.

LBA Updates
Jessica Fain
President

When we left our classrooms on March 13th, we had no clue that it would be the last time that we would make music with our ensembles and see our students. I am sure I am not alone in saying that I miss my students, structure, and most importantly the music that we were creating. It has been a month and two days since we all received the news that we would not be returning to our classroom until April 13th. Since then, we have tried to establish what the new “norm” looks like for music education. As music educators, we have been trained on how to adapt and overcome obstacles that are thrown our way. However, I am sure that none of us were prepared for the obstacles that we have been experiencing daily.

As you all know by now, we will not be attending school for the remainder of the school year. In addition to that, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette has informed me that they will not be able to host groups on their campus through May 31st and possibly through the month of June. Unfortunately, that means that we will have to cancel the Louisiana All-Star Summer Band Clinic/Concerts. I am sure that your students were looking forward to this experience and I hate that they are going to lose another opportunity to make music. However, I do want to make you aware of a few things that we are going to do and what we will need from you during this time:

If your student sent in their fee, the money will be returned to the address listed on the form.

All students who were accepted into LBA will receive a membership certificate. Those will be mailed to each band director so that you may distribute them.

Please email the respective coordinator if you need to change the spelling of one of your student’s names before we print the certificates. (due by April 17th)

Middle School- gbienvenu@mylpsd.com
BLAST!- mswiber@stmaryk12.net
Jazz- gambill@cpsb.org
Directors, if your personal address has changed, please email corkran@bossierschools.org

In order to honor our seniors, they will receive a certificate, LBA patch, and an LBA t-shirt. Michael Swiber and Timothy Gambill will ensure that those students will receive those items.

Bandmaster of the Year ballots will not go out this year. Those that were nominated will remain on the ballot for 2021.

We are so very thankful for your patience throughout this time and are grateful for everything that you do to support LBA. This is a truly unprecedented situation, and everyone seems to be trying to navigate as best as they can through the fog.  Having said that, I sincerely hope you and your families are healthy and taking all the precautions to keep everyone out of harm’s way.  If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email me.

Red Stick Orff Updates
Kelly Stomps
Representative

Over the past few months, I have frequently seen the word “pivot” being used in relationship to businesses and schools as they navigate the unchartered territory of the Covid-19 pandemic. Each time I see or hear that word, I think of the scene from “Friends” as Ross keeps shouting “PIVOT” as the characters are trying to move a couch up a flight of stairs. The couch ends up getting stuck in the stairwell instead.

With that said, I am extremely proud of the Red Stick Orff Chapter’s ability to “pivot”. We were originally scheduled to have our chapter share on April 5, 2020. Instead of cancelling our workshop, we decided to host a virtual workshop on distance learning techniques and technology. Special thanks to board member, Erin Fort, for hosting the meeting and sharing her tech skills with the chapter! I have felt more confident and comfortable with distance learning thanks to this virtual workshop.

The Red Stick Orff Chapter has also begun planning our workshops for the 2020-2021 school year. I am excited to announce that Josh Southard will be presenting “It’s All About Process: Keetman’s Building Bricks and Beyond” on September 12th. Be sure to check out our webpage at http://www.redstickorff.com/ or follow us on Facebook to get the latest information on our workshops!
