PRACTICING LOVE - FROM JEANMARIE
|
When I lived and taught in New York City, I brought a big bag of chocolate hearts with me to the classes I taught on Valentine’s Day. As my students lay in savasana, I placed a heart beside each one - so that when they rolled over to their right side they saw it waiting for them. Something small and sweet that lit their faces up and that warmed my heart in return.
It was easy for me to give the hearts out to those students who came to practice with me. They were a captive audience! But in 2014, I felt expansive. Maybe it was the fact that my (now) husband and I were together. Or, perhaps the fact that I was in a committed relationship had me looking at love from a different perspective…from the perspective of love as a verb, and not an object.
All relationships require some form of commitment, and the commitment inherent in relationship may be the ultimate spiritual practice. It is a living organism that reflects the continuous choices of the individuals involved. And that is the key - to remember that love is a choice… that to understand your relationships as a practice is to be in the practice of love. And to do so is to recognize love not as an object… not as a treasure to search for as an end game, rather as an ever-expanding practice.
The path of yoga is a path of Oneness – with oneself and with all things. Those who move beyond the mundane aspects of the path come to understand that the true practice comes in being a part of the dance of life. To fully experience this dance, one needs partnership… the person (or people) who support and love you of course, but who also reflect back to you. Who challenge you. Because we all know that we don’t grow and evolve when everything is easy-breezy. As a lotus grows in the mud, so we grow through challenge. And let’s face it – nothing challenges us as our most intimate relationships.
Through relationship, we move into the deeper realms of intimacy and vulnerability. We merge. Any relationship that lasts - be it a friendship, partnership, or marriage - is one that supports collective growth. The coming together should not diminish the individuality of each partner. It should strengthen it. It is out of the balance between individuality and union that love, whose incredible strength is equal only to its incredible fragility, is born and reborn.
Coming back to that expansive Valentine’s Day of 2014, I challenged myself to give love in a way that was wildly uncomfortable to me. As I was walking to the studio to teach (with chocolate hearts in tow), the thought came to me that I should not only give out these little expressions of love to my students… I should give them out to strangers as well. Being an introvert at heart, the idea of literally giving candy to strangers made my heart palpitate… which is why I forced myself to do it.
After class, I put the remaining hearts in easy reach within my bag, took a deep breath and made my way to the street. Remembering that the practice of love is about the other and not myself, I started giving out hearts with a smile and a “Happy Valentine’s Day.” People were hesitant to receive the treat, but really only for a split second.
And then? Joy. Friendliness. Gratitude. All from them to me, while within me I could literally feel my heart strings vibrate and my heart itself expand. The feeling was so great that I went into the nearest store and bought another bag of hearts and continued the practice for the rest of the day.
To love is to give of yourself. The joy comes within the gift of self that you give to another (or others). Love is not an object. Objects are finite, and love is limitless. So on this Valentine’s Day, practice love in all its forms.
Don’t look for “love.”
Simply, practice love.
xo,
~ Jeanmarie (jeanmarie_nyc@me.com)
