President's Greeting
Carol Lupton
LMEA President

As we are all diving into the opening of the school year, I find myself looking forward to the new challenges, while reflecting on last year’s achievements. This past year certainly presented some unique challenges for me personally, as well as for LMEA organizationally. As I reflect, I count my blessings. I am very grateful for my improving health.

I am also grateful for the many positives that emerged within LMEA’s activities and events. Our All-State Ensembles were exceptional this past year. Your Division Chairpersons outdid themselves. Our District Directors did a marvelous job in handling financial and operational matters at the local level.

The new comprehensive all-state programs became an instant souvenir from our conference. The membership really liked this all-inclusive concert program format. Special acknowledgement and accolades to Joseph Nasser and Carolyn Herrington for bringing these programs from concept to reality.

One event that was truly missed this past year was our State Large Ensemble Assessment. The elimination of the State Assessment was a difficult decision, but it did place greater focus on our District Assessments. The feedback pertaining to the “Sight Reading Panel” at the District level revealed somewhat mixed results, but overall positive reactions from members.

During this new school year, I encourage you to become familiar with Federal Title IV-A regulations and budgeting. While this government funding source is complicated, a percentage of these funds should assist in providing students access to a well-rounded education (e.g. music and arts). It may be worth your while to find out how your school system is distributing these funds.

I am so looking forward to this year. I hope are all of you are off to a wonderful start. As I peruse the internet, I see so much evidence of Louisiana’s music teachers being very active. Social Media has been full of band camp and music education happenings. Music classrooms are being decorated. Resources are being shared across multiple music platforms. It is go gratifying.

I offer each of you my best wishes for a successful and musical school year.

Past President Updates
Fran Hebert
LMEA Past President
I trust that your transition from summer days to school days proved to be a smooth segue. It is wonderful to return to students who share our love for music. From there we can take on any challenge that the school system places in front of us.

I anticipate great things in my second, and last year as LMEA Past-President. We discontinued our efforts to provide an upper-level assessment such as the state or regional event. Recently, I attended an educator conference with Governor John Bel Edwards.

The subject of the large window of time for state testing was introduced. It was stated that LMEA has no calendar opportunity to meet the needs of teachers and students with the scheduling of state/regional assessment events during this testing time which encompasses most of April and May.

Several music teachers were in attendance and stood united on the travesty of loss for an event that has been produced for music educators and their students for more than 50 years. The governor agreed on this point and stated that this window of time needs to be adjusted. This is all the more reason to validate our music education instruction through positive and proven LMEA District assessments with adjudication provided by our esteemed colleagues in the field.

Thank you for continuing your support of LMEA performance assessment activities. We intend to reinstate the Vocal and Instrumental Solo/Ensemble Assessment at the State Level. Contact your District Director to find out more.

NAfME representatives met with the LMEA Executive Board and members of the Conference Planning Session in August. It is hoped that our national organization will provide more connected leadership to foster a positive future relationship with our state and with its individual members.

Although the final results for LMEA to remain the state affiliate for NAfME was secured with the ‘Yes’ vote, it was a narrow majority that prevailed. Both the national and state organizations must show tangible evidence of support to prevent further erosion of confidence.

I look forward to seeing each of you at our fall conference November 21-25, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Baton Rouge where we will enjoy informative clinics and meetings, awesome music ensemble performances, and take time to visit with friends. More on the latter when I see you.

It is amazing how the NAfME Collegiate Summit has grown over the past several years. With 3 days of sessions and professional development, the Collegiate Summit is a collaborative effort among the Louisiana Music Educators Association, university faculty, K-12 music educators, and retired music teachers to focus on the needs of undergraduate music education majors and beginning music teachers. The 2019 NAfME Collegiate Summit (November 23-25, 2019) provides a variety of professional development sessions for college students, and beginning and veteran music teachers. Please see this Preview of the 2019 sessions open to collegiate members as well as practicing music teachers/directors at this year’s LMEA Conference.
