Lunar Eclipse/ Full Moon in Capricorn
“In a crystal we have a clear evidence of the existence of a formative life principle, and thought we cannot understand the life of a crystal, it is nonetheless a living being.”
Nicola Tesla

“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.”
Mary Oliver

“In the wholeheartedness of concentration, world and self begin to cohere. With that state comes an enlarging: of what may be known, what may be felt, what may be done.”
Jane Hirshfield

Imagine the formation of a crystal, a process through which atoms and molecules begin to come together and harden, taking three-dimensional shapes. Chemically, it is said that these substances become stable and with an orderly internal pattern. Such beautiful “living being,” as Tesla referred to them,  were known to the ancients, in fact, the root word “kreus” meant “to begin to freeze and form a crust.” There is evidence that crystal was also known as “petrified ice,”  a powerful image that conveys the presence of stone (from Latin "petro"), and the coldness of ice.

This process of crystallization, through which fluid and amorphous substance,  takes a defined and lasting form, is one that metaphorically relates to the archetype of Saturn and the sign it rules, Capricorn, where the Full Moon/solar eclipse is taking place this month.  Where Capricorn opposite sign is watery Cancer, ruled by the Moon, associated with the feminine, infancy, women, mother, and always changing and taking the shape of the form that contains it, Capricorn is an Earth sign, solid, stable, slow at change and related to fatherly figures, authority, structures, and old age.

While it`s known that all changes and fluctuates in the universe, the pace of change differs. What falls under the domain of Saturn, change at a slow-pace, as it "crystallizes" and gives stability and structures. Think at the bones that are ruled by this planet; we need them to be robust and steady, for they are the inner structure of the organism.

During eclipses, the fabric of life is sometimes ripped by events or insights that re-shape our worldview and propel us towards new understandings or awakenings. At the last New Moon/Solar Eclipse on July 2nd, you might have become aware of your deeper needs and yearning, particularly around home and family, sense of belonging, and emotional needs.

At this Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse, the Moon meets Saturn, Pluto and the South Node, opposing Sun and Venus in Cancer. This configuration constellates a type of energy that is markedly Saturnian,  calling into question, among other things, taking responsibilities, evaluating commitments, assessing authority figures in our lives and in the collective.
Saturn, in its best and most constructive expression assists in weeding through our world of fluid wishes and plans by slowing us down. It makes us aware of time passing and moves us towards giving shape to our desires and turning them into commitments so that they become temporary “bedrock” in our lives. For something to become a bedrock, one has to commit and practice. If you commit to grow your awareness and meditate, you set time aside to for that, and such practice becomes a pillar of your daily routine. The area where Capricorn falls into your chart might show where your commitment is undergoing a profound change, perhaps it`s your work, or your marriage and relationships, or to a particular practice or activity or way of being.

At this time, though,  the process unfolding is one that touches many layers of our lives and reaches deep into the Earth. It vaguely resembles the formation of diamonds which happens deep under the Earth`s crust where intense pressure and heat transform carbon in the most resilient and hard substance known to humans. Archetypally, this is the domain of Pluto, the god of the underworld, presiding over resources that lie deep within our home-planet and the un-appealable process of transformation and death.  Pluto relates to what we keep secret and hidden to others and ourselves. As such, this planet makes us aware of our powerlessness, our shame, our capacity to survive and of that force that may lay within us and it's awakened in times of threats. It`s also a deep of well if instinctual forces that have been repressed by the patriarchy,  and that have been bursting out once again in the collective and reshaping our Western society.

Astrologically, this eclipse triggers the configuration mentioned above as it continues to unfold all through next year, marking a new powerful beginning with a peak in January 2020. The forces active represented by Saturn and Pluto, both in the domain of Capricorn, resemble this process of diamonds formation, preceded though by a time of flux and chaos which might feel disorienting, and frightening for we do not know what happens deep into the earth. Nor we know how Pluto looks like, he was said to wear a helmet that made him invisible in the rare occasions he came in the upper world of livings.

The domain of Capricorn that presides over authority, structures, governments, large organizations, buildings, achievements will be dismantled while the new ones will be slowly created, probably not without a struggle by those relinquishing power.

A note about fear seems necessary, for this level of change stirs deep fears and power struggles which might manifest with rigidity, an obsession to control, repression of those that might feel threatening and that are therefore scapegoated. We use the word “petrified" to describe becoming frozen and turning into stone by fear. The same process that gives us beautiful crystals also can represent extreme rigidity that paralyzes us and finds validation also in Saturn`s myth. He devoured his children for fear of being overthrown, just as he did with his father, Uranus. As an inner or outer tyrant, he feeds on terror and mistrust, hidden behind thick walls while keeping new growth and change (children) imprisoned.

The current configuration with Pluto might accelerate this dynamic, and we might notice it in ourselves and out in the world, as it is already unfolding. To pause and to confront with compassion and kindness, our personal fears and traumas seem very relevant, for the current climate will stir our deep inner water. We might learn what it means to be humans in an age of great renewal which might manifest with changes to the benefits of the greater whole, opening doors to possibilities that we might not even currently envision. To remind ourselves that we are all part of the change and that we all play a role in the process is relevant, for as Jane Goodall tells us in matters of environmental protection "every choice we make counts."

On a personal level, we all experience such times differently, and as I have written before, those born with planets or point between around 18 and 26 of Capricorn, Cancer, Libra, and Aries might feel more intensely the gravity and weight of their responsibility, and commitments. At this lunar eclipse, there might be cathartic experiences, that deeply awaken our core and allow for the slow release of what has been buried deep into the darkness of the psyche. There might be changes to the unfolding of your life, to your work, to your career, to how you thought life was supposed to be. Reckoning with this might feel jarring, and self-compassion and kindness are necessary to take first and foremost responsibility for ourselves, our own fears, mistrust, and needs.

While this process is unfolding, to harness this constructive energy of this eclipse, you might be aware of what really matters to you, what commitment you are attempt to make, and allow yourself to take some time to test and see if that can become, for a while, the initial new ground that sustains your growth in life. Be aware that Plutonian energy digs up the most unwelcomed parts of ourselves, and it`s helpful o make space for that within so that we won't see it projected outside. As Mary Oliver reminds, that darkness is indeed a gift that roots us to the depths of our most authentic ourselves.
