Aquarius New Moon – February 4th
"The only thing you sometimes have control over is perspective."

“Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.” Dalai Lama

February, the month associated with the sign of Aquarius, literally meant the month of purification. for in  Latin "February" means purification and "arius" means "about". Rains and flood happen at this time in the Western hemisphere, such as the one of the river Nile in ancient Egypt. The waters which covered the land for weeks made the soil fertile again and ready to nurture the crops.

For the Greeks, the time of Aquarius was symbolized by the god Ganymede was depicted as holding a jug and pouring water on Earth.
From the heavens, up high in the sky, this God held water as the  source of life and renewal.

Some might think that Aquarius would be a water sign, the name itself contains the word for water, that is Aqua, just as much as the symbol is a human god pouring water. However, Aquarius is a sign that belongs to the element of air symbolizing the realm of ideas and knowledge. The jug carrier which appears many cultures pours waters while looking down, with perspective, with detachment, with clarity on the unfolding events on Earth.

This idiosyncrasy symbolizes one of the characteristics of Aquarius which represents the unconventional, the one who "sees" things differently, from a different angle we may say. As astrological symbolism changes through time, the more recent connection with the planet Uranus, that presides above the starry heavens, suggests one of those keys element of this sign,  that is the capacity of seeing from above,  like a spotter on the lookout in the distance. From a higher place, one sees patterns, paths, and the first light far on the horizon.

Aquarian energy abounds at this New Moon, when the Sun and the Moon will meet Mercury, the planet of communication in exaltation in Aquarius, with the support of Jupiter from Sagittarius.
After the heightened days of the eclipses in January, this new moon might manifest a fertile ground for both a time purification and a time for brainstorming,  to gather new perspectives,  cultivate new ideas and be the inventor in your life. What discovery are you coming up? What new gathering?

Seeing differently is a quality well symbolized by Prometheus, who stole the fire of knowledge from the Gods and gave it to humans. His name meant Foresight, that one who sees far in the distance, both physically through the eyes, or through intuition or that one who has knowledge that changes our ways of living. Just like water in the jug was a source of life, fire as knowledge symbolizes the human capacity to alter one`s way of being.

If you imagine, or if you mindfully try to observe your surrounding from  being on top of a tree like a bird, or from an airplane, or simply on top of a hill...you may see far, you may gather perspective, you may see the distance movement of the oceans, or  lights,  or again a pink veil softening  dark grey clouds that in the Northern hemisphere often cover the sky this month. While culturally we tend to privilege detachment, this new Moon has a quality that relates to perspective,  helping perhaps some who have had a scrambling eclipse month gather a sense of knowledge by looking in the distance, by contemplating the possibility of a wide open blue sky, or by recognizing the wisdom found in detachment.

In such a pattern lies the danger of detachment, aloofness, or perhaps coldness. When we say the height of knowledge, it's wise to remember we are beings of Earth and our human-animal condition in kinship relationship with other beings of every color and race.

It`s a blurry line the one between rationalizing away the experience, and gathering perspective. Moving up to the height of the stars in your own personal process does not deny your own felt very human experience, with the undeniable suffering and pains. Sitting on top of the hill make the valley appears different, perhaps hides the dried-out bed of the river by the lack of much-needed rain, but that bed is still there. You might though find soothing and peace in the blow of the crispy air, and from up there seeing some clouds in the very far distance.

And just a spotter will do sitting up on its spot, sharing your new found insights and knowledge, ideas and perspectives, with your fellow friends, ad group.

Ritual
As the new Moon represents the end and new beginning, it might be helpful to take time as the moon is in her balsamic phase to cleanse oneself. In the spirit of Aquarius, how about bathing in the rain, in a body of water of your choice that may feel like the waters of renewal poured down from the heavens and focused on releasing and letting go what it no longer serving parts of your self.
You may gather new perspectives by engaging in begin open, trying something new and embodying what it feels like to fly or climb a bit higher, maybe a mountain or a hill, or a  floor high up. In other words, embodying an experience of cooperation and connection might be insightful to harness the potential for expanded horizons that this new moon holds.

If you experiment even more with how changing  perspective, gathering insight , you might also imagine being like a little stone laying in a river bed, perhaps floating moved by the bustling water, rolling through the lichens. And then imagine waking up, and like a bird that seized Ganymede to bring him up to the heavens, sitting up among the stars and looking down at the long path your feet and body have walked, step by step.
Vanishing in the luminous scent of flickering stars, you may allow your body to bathe in the eternal wave of light-water flowing through the endless universe.
