You don’t have to be an engineer to appreciate this story.
A toothpaste factory had a problem: Due to the way the production line was set up, sometimes empty boxes were shipped without the tube inside. People with experience in designing production lines will tell you how difficult it is to have everything happen with timings so precise that every single unit coming off of it is perfect 100% of the time. Small variations in the environment (which cannot be controlled in a cost-effective fashion) mean quality assurance checks must be smartly distributed across the production line so that customers all the way down to the supermarket won’t get frustrated and purchase another product instead.

Lucky Shot, a Wisconsin based novelty glass and gift company that embeds a bullet in its products is giving all its employees a handgun for Christmas. To comply with state law, owner Ben Wolfgram distributed gun-store gift certificates rather than actual weapons. After some initial resistance, all 16 of his full-time employees have acquired a weapon. "Now we have an entire armed staff". "That's pretty good."

A 60 year old millionaire is getting married and throws a big wedding reception.
His friends are quite jealous and in a quiet moment one of them asks him how did he land such a hot 23 year old beauty?
“Simple,” grins the millionaire, “I faked my age."
His friends are really amazed and ask him how much he said.
"Well", he replied. "I said I was 87."
Grampa said "don't bring a knife to a gun fight", well, how about a... uh... hockey puck?!
That is what Oakland University is preparing their students to "carry", thousands of them. The plan is that when the bad guy shows up with his AR and fifteen mags, the students take off their backpacks and, as their colleagues drop, they fish around searching for that hockey puck they were given in September. And when, and when, they find it they stand and deliver the knockout blow with the... hockey puck. Sounds like a plan to us, although a handful of lug nuts might work better if you are going that route.

We get a fair number of requests from people wondering what to buy for friends as gifts. Tough question! If you don't know the specific make or model of a gun your friend owns or collects it is risky to buy him a publication that is model or make specific. If you do know, we probably have it. We have a better idea.
You probably have a good feel for the era that interests your friend, so below we suggest some publications from different eras. These are merchant catalogs that offer a vivid picture of not only guns of the time but also ammunition, specs, reloading, sights clothing and accessories. All of these books offer a really good read and we are sure your friends will be grateful for your thought.

also... for a terrific read consider a Bannerman catalog. Bannerman was, for a time, one of the largest arms dealers in the world and the company stories are particularly interesting - like the time the city fathers in New York discovered that Bannerman had tons and tons of high explosives stored at their shop on Broadway and invited him to more them. The result was Bannerman Island on the Hudson near West Point where the remains of his castle arsenal can be viewed today. We think the 1927 catalog was the high point of the operation (check out Abby's indexes at the individual webpages for each item to see some of the stuff in the catalog):

Reduction Marketing:
 Last week we were grocery shopping and I picked up a carton of OJ. Abby noticed when we put it in the fridge that is was slightly smaller than the one next to it which was already smaller than the old-fashioned "half gallon" we used to buy. When I looked at the small print I saw it was just 54 ounces; a full ten ounce glass short of what we used to buy.

Dear Rob, I have a number of pertinent snarls about the mild pink and blue suede shoes approaches for young ladies buying their first pastel colored .380's Autos for keeping by the bedside in case of break in or home invasion. My argument is that these fashionable pink and blue toned pistols are bloody dangerous as they can be taken for toys by children or could be very confusing for responding police officers - is it a toy or is it real ? Too late, I made a mistake "Bang ! Bang !" - and someone is deader than dead, maybe a badly supervised child - or a police officer. Modern multi toned pistols are damned dangerous and misleading in two directions, they attract children and they could make a Police Officer in a bad situation pause a second too long.
My considered opinion is that a pistol, rifle, or shotgun should look like a traditional piece of armament - like God and Craftsmen intended them to look. Sub Machine Gun Styles are for the Military. Good Grief - so called sporting rifles with perforated cooling jackets and all manner of "rails and attachments" are not for the mentally unstable, they are for those who want to play at war and who are precisely the sort of people who should enlist for real training with either the Army or the Marines. Let the services decide if the recruit has the mettle. These weapons are for men and women who have earned their stripes- and scars in places like Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan etc etc.
Had I the really big money today, I would go for a double barrelled shotgun by a reputable English, American or Italian Custom Gunsmith - the real thing with prime walnut stocks - all made by real craftsmen. Pistols- either revolver or semi automatic- S & W, Colt, Ruger, Webley come to mind. For the military nothing is more satisfying and emphatic than a Colt 1911 .45 - or a really good American-made revolver - I like my revolvers chambered for .45 Long Colt (or .357 Magnum as one can practice shoot with a .38 Special Load). For plinking fun there is nothing to beat a Colt Woodsman 1935 .22 - although the various Ruger and Browning .22's are also great shooters.
In case you think I overstate my objections to modern trends in gun manufacturing that tease and appease the wannabee's; I did my time in both the Korean War & a few S.E. Asian Jungles serving as an officer in both the Army & the Police. And I shoot the guns I have mentioned. Above all quality always beats quantity. James Blackford

Dear Alfred, Our name appears on all our publications. They are not forgeries of originals- because we reprint over 6000 different publications and using the same paper, size, inks etc would be impossible for what we charge:
About Us:
Regarding the quality of our reprints we have a few statements to make. All reprints are done on at least 92 bright 20# acid free white paper and the images are the best we can reproduce with the latest digital equipment and software available. Most covers are heavy semi-glossy (or high gloss) high contrast paper and are printed in color unless otherwise stated. Keeping in mind that we reprint over 6000+ different old gun catalogs, books, magazines and gun manuals, all our reprints necessarily reflect the quality of the originals or copies we work from. Not all are perfect by any means. By definition ephemera, especially as it refers to old advertising catalogs, was meant to be temporary. Many old catalogs were printed on poor quality, thin paper with cheap inks that bled. They suffer from stains, rips, bleed-through, fading and a host of other problems. Not all can be restored to original condition (although some can be made better than they were when they came from the printer). We also work with both old reprints and old photocopies. Why? Because where else will we find some of the most rare old gun catalogs we offer? We do, however, replace poor copies with better ones if they become available. Also, don't forget we don't charge much either. Irrespective of "quality" or rarity we charge based on number of pages, advertising costs and cost to acquire and reproduce (color ink is especially expensive). We should add that we do not necessarily reprint things to the exact size of the original or on the same paper or with the same binding etc. To do so would be prohibitively expensive. Also, some authored books also carry a royalty fee and the price reflects that. Cheers, Abby

Hi Joe, I've never seen one. I think the best you could look for is a modern book giving breakdowns for old handguns. You might be able to find one with a Lebel in it; or you could try the online chat groups looking for advice about one where there are members familiar with the weapon. Dear AC, Thank you for your note. I'm writing to explain how and why we use Paypal. PayPal is not owned by eBay, they split three years ago and while Paypal made gun transactions difficult while a part of Ebay, they have since softened their stance. As a result we have had no complaints about Paypal from our purchasers for years.
We began using Paypal fifteen years ago because banks at that time were very skeptical of online business and charged a fortune to online sellers. Many things have changed since then but we still use Paypal because the shopping cart at our website was set up to use Paypal and to change now would involve re-coding each of our 6000 or so web pages, the cost of which would effectively double our prices to you.
PayPal is our "clearing house" for all online purchases, but you don't need a PayPal "account". It allows our customers to pay with any credit card they prefer including a Costco card just like a bank and they are still cheaper than banks, a savings we pass along to you.

Dear Paypal, We dispute the Gary Arnie’s claim, whatever it is. He bought a pdf file of a manual from us. We sent it the next day via wetransfer which is a large file sending service because email doesn’t normally accept large files like ours. We exchanged several emails wherein Mr. Arnie claimed not to have received the file we promised. We took great pains to carefully explain to him to look for the email messages from wetransfer, open the message and download the file. He repeatedly said he never got the re-sent file. The other day I explained, again, how to recognize the file from wetransfer, how to open it and what to do etc. This last time he was apparently successful because we got confirmation from wetransfer that he had downloaded the file. Please see attached screen shot of the copy of the confirmation sent to us by wetransfer.
Honestly, the paragraph above relates just a fraction of the correspondence back and forth we have had with Mr. Arnie. He bought it, we sent it (several times), he got it. Please let me know if I can help in any other way. Rob Mouat for Abby Mouat
