Snow Globes And Mindfulness In India

Mindfulness In India
I am typing this via sporadic internet, from a Mindfulness and Yoga retreat in Pune, India, where I have been from January 15th until January 30th. I see images of snowy New York in the few minutes a week that images drift into our little meditation ashram from the world outside. And I feel "with" my New Yorkers in their snow drifts ...

Our retreat mate Kimberly uses the image of a snowglobe to describe our daily experiences of meditation. When we sit, our thoughts swirl, like the flurries of a snowglobe. Gradually, as we sit and silently watch, they settle. When they are utterly settled, utterly still, a supreme calmness reigns. And in that stillness, in that calm ~ we find Bliss. Then, we seek it in the snowstorms of Life.

For two weeks I awaken daily to birdsong, from the third floor of my house by the river in Koregaon Park.

We practice morning yoga on a roof deck, to a view of birds and water buffaloes on the Mula Mutha river. We share meals, meditation, circle encounters and journaling sessions, and interact daily with the local people and animals, market places and parks. I learn to navigate the left lane roads on my borrowed bicycle, and convert rupees to dollars in my head.

I gaze into the eyes of every woman or girl I meet, and I find a sister, a mother, a soul twin. I talk with them, and I hear echoed back my very same loves and concerns, joys and aches.

Twenty years after starting my Yoga practice, I finally visit Mother India, the birthplace of Yoga. My son Raphael, whose birth began my Yoga path, recently turned twenty. I return from the Motherland as though in my own new birth ~ as indeed each day, each phase of our life truly is, when we awaken with that realization each day.

Dance with your snowglobe.
Sit with your snowglobe.
Let it settle.
Breathe.
Be still.

Bliss.
