Blossom dearie
Dear friends,

At least one Christmas cactus in Laurey's picture window has decided it's close enough, and gotten the flowering season underway.

Laurey's kitchen window and top of her fridge were always packed with small pots full of Christmas cacti. Some of them found new homes with friends last spring; I decided the stragglers deserved an outdoor summer. They got through that, a little overexposed to the summer sun, but thriving.

I repotted the whole collection (mine and hers) a few weeks ago and hauled them in from the frost on the back deck.

Now they cluster on Laurey's twig-form cocktail table, under the newly re-hung double-pane picture window.

Thrilled to be back in the warmth with new fertile soil, they are going at it, and buds are everywhere. Thought you'd like to see!

November 24, 2004

Here it is Thanksgiving Eve. The kitchen bustle is done but the Garden Room has been transformed into "Packing Central". Guests arrive in a half hour to pick up their dinners to go. And then we'll close up for the day. Our gang is scattering around the country for the weekend. Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee. Some are staying right here, cooking for friends. I'm headed to my sister's house for the weekend.

We'll be gearing up, taking a deep breath, centering ourselves, and getting ready for the next month. So, I'm going to send this out early.

Here are a few random thoughts:

1. Have a lovely holiday.
2. If you're driving, please be careful.
3. If you're flying, get to the airport in plenty of time and be nice to the baggage folks, okay? I mean, can YOU imagine doing their job?
4. Come see us next week.

We'll be ready for the Winter Holidays - after our break.

Cheers, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Laurey

MusicWorks! and the Asheville Symphony
My husband Fred, retired from the President's Own Marine Band, is booked solid this holiday season, raising his sweet clarinet voice in many of our area symphony orchestras.

Joining him for an Asheville Symphony rehearsal this past week, we were just in time to catch Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik played for and featuring young people, including these charmers from the MusicWorks! program. MusicWorks! is a three-year pilot sponsored by our Symphony, based on an educational program called El Sistema.

I captured this smile from Maestro Daniel Meyer as the youngsters tuned up on their Orff instruments, tuneful plunky little xylophones. Two of the kids carried the melody, with their own personal slant, and the others kept a solid backbeat. Accompanied by the entire Symphony Orchestra, they sounded terrific, and they rehearsed their bows just right.

Laurey and I played Eine kleine on violins as little people, with the Green Mountain Fiddlers in Middlebury, Vermont. I imagine we sounded about the same as these enthusiastic thumpers, really.

MusicWorks! Program Director Brian Kellum plays violin for the Symphony, and is pictured here with Hall Fletcher music teacher Melody McGarrahan. Go kids!

Our Dinners-To-Go, Lasagnas, and Casseroles include all diners - we pay close and sincere attention to those of you who are choosing to eat gluten-free or vegetable-only.

And the selections are so beautiful!

This was the starting layer for Laurey's Polenta with Roasted Vegetables just a little while ago - here's Deb setting up the beautiful tomato base.

Thank you for dining with us - much much more to come!
