Laurey's notes (from a lifetime of writing)
[So much has been written about Laurey and her life projects, but of course the best spokesman is Laurey herself.  In this column we present archival reprints of her messages.

February 1997

I made myself a steak last night. A simple meal, easy, satisfying.

My mother never made a plain steak. The very first time I had one was an unusual weekend when I was home alone with my father. For some reason my mother and sisters were away. My father and I went to the grocery store. He, with a twinkle in his eye, bought a steak for the two of us. Honestly I can't remember if we even had anything else with it. We went home, he broiled it. We ate it. There was some left over. The next morning he made me some eggs, warmed up the Steak. Breakfast. Not inspired, but, for me, memorable.

I am the youngest of his five daughters. The last one to not be his wished-for John Ferguson Masterton III. Deciding that it didn't matter after all, he included me in his life, made me his companion. Guided my tastes in a different direction. One year he and I spent a lot of time at the race track, watching Stock car races, Drag races, Miniature Indy 500 models, loud, scary, fun times. French fries, hot dogs (perish the thought at Blueberry Hill!) I think that's when I first tasted pizza. He taught me how to play pool. Introduced me to beer. Just sips, folks.

If life was a culinary adventure at home with my mother, times with my father were full of trips, explorations, discoveries of the lighter side of eating. He gave me golf lessons when I was ten, hoping. I suppose, that I would grow into a golf mate for him. No such luck. I found it hot, slow, dull. Saved only by the thrill of frosty Grape Soda at the clubhouse. Of course we skied together. Run after run followed by steamy hot Bouillon, Chocolate Eclairs. A journey to the Tunbridge Fair in the fall opened my life to tastes of gritty Cotton Candy and hard-as-nails Candy Apples and "I promise not to tell her you let us" rides on the midway.

So, a non-gourmet meal last night reminded me of those times. Simple tastes, simple memories. Takes plain and fancy to make up a life. I'm glad I had both.

Blessings on the Mac n' Cheese..
And there I was in the kitchen a few days ago, snapping photos of our cooks creating beauty around us ... when the sunbeams hit Margot's macaroni.

Seriously, the sun's rays just lit up the bowl in a burst of glorious golden joy -- I wish you could have seen it!

It felt like a light-hearted Divine Message:
"Today You Will Eat Macaroni and Cheese!!!"

Bright and creamy, filled with real cheese and real love.. Laurey's Cafe Mac n' Cheese is pretty darn terrific!

So that's what I had for lunch.

Can't let Life's Important Moments pass you by...

Marty and the Blueberries

I asked Marty to emerge from the bakery corner to showcase his creamy Blueberry dessert - we just never get to SEE him!

These little puddings and swirls come out just for the moment... look in the deli case and see today's special creations - tucked over on the left - can't pass them by!

I believe this one was lemon creme - we enjoyed strawberry fruit tarts last week, and this was a quick riff on that theme.

Gosh, thank you, Marty!!

Rebecca and the Mashed Potatoes

mmmhmmm - Mashed Red Skin Potatoes... just like we're featuring on our Thanksgiving menu...

Thank you for bringing us to your Holiday table!!
Our Thanksgiving menu is right on the first page of our website...
