Do Let's Party!
Dear friends,

Hope you caught our wonderful Thanksgiving Menu this week - thought we'd send a special blast about it. It's right on the front page of Laurey's Cafe website, so you won't lose it.

Let us know as soon as you decide what to send you, and for how many people  - we're thrilled to help you begin to plan your celebrations.

Kate, Laurey's Catering Director, has been snapping some lovely photos of the shop, all dressed up for parties we hosted recently. Give us a call when you need a little extra space - for a dinner or a lunch or a brunch.

The Garden Room at Laurey's Cafe seats parties of 25 to 50 easily - somewhat more or somewhat fewer? - you are all most welcome!

Laurey's notes (from a lifetime of writing)
[So much has been written about Laurey and her life projects, but of course the best spokesman is Laurey herself.  In this column we present archival reprints of her messages.
[I am re-typing Laurey's OFFLINE early newsletter, a paper version, produced only once a month in the early years. This is from November of 1997. - Heather]

November 1997

The fall days of my childhood were a blasting, blazing wash of color. Screeching reds, flashes of yellow, blinding oranges flooded over the hills, filled valleys. lined the roads and whipped our heads around in a frenzy. Here things are different.

Just now, a good three weeks after Vermont's show, the leaves here are only starting to turn. On my way home a few branches are touched with a pastel yellow, a dusty orange, a blush of rouge. Many of the leaves are still green, varied, muted. Bright colors exist here and there. But I have to make a point to look.

On my road goldenrod appears. Poison ivy, fierce all summer, provides the only brilliant red. And last week there were still asters and chicory. White, lavender.

My garden, dazzling in the spring and dried out and embarrassing in the late summer, has rebloomed. Still, nothing is obvious. Nothing is overbearing. Nothing as flashy as it was those many months ago. But the pineapple sage, planted back in May, now has tiny bright red flowers. Verbena blooms here and there. The whole purple section is alive if I look hard enough. Pips of lavender, touches of indigo. A background of green, a blend of brown. It draws me in.

The other day I dug up a new bed next to my house. Spent the better part of the day digging, hauling, loosening. Dragged compost up the hill. Made my very first rock wall. By the time it was dark everything was planted. Tidy. Tucked in. On my many trips up and down I had a chance to revisit my yard. Greeted the drying grasses. Nodded to the fruit trees, now confidently six months old. Wished a happy fall to the weeping willow, planted this time last year and now a good foot or two taller.

On some days I walk around in the garden before I head off to the shop. From a distance there is not much to bother with. No flash. No yank of color. Nothing much to talk about. But right up close is a different tale. So much is there to be seen.

It's all right there. If I look. So I do.
