Laurey's notes (from a lifetime of writing)
[So much has been written about Laurey and her life projects, but of course the best spokesman is Laurey herself.  In this column we present archival reprints of her messages. This is an early newsletter from her online records.]

October 23, 2004

Hi there. Zounds - here we are at the end of October. What the heck happened to the summer? Where has the light gone? What kind of winter will we have?

It amazes me to note that we are now at our one year anniversary in this new space. I cannot imagine how we ever fit into the little shop we moved from. The tables here are filled every day these days. The shop bustles. "Basket World," the place up front where we have retail products for sale, is full of all our new finds from this summer's Fancy Food Show. We're gearing up for Gift Basket season, Thanksgiving, Holiday Parties-phewf!

A year ago I was a wreck. I had been thinking about the new space for months, planning, imagining, drawing, hoping. I had file folders filled with specifications of equipment, lists of pots and pans and racks and shelves. The only comfort was that my folders were bright-colored, which made me happy. What was inside the folders was scary, because all the equipment cost a lot of money and I was just not sure that moving was the right thing to do. What if no one came to the new shop? What if I spent all this money for nothing? What if things didn't fit?

I remember not sleeping much last year at this time. I'd wake up, sweating and panic-stricken, worrying about laundry hampers and brooms and dry storage and signs. I lost weight, which is not such a bad thing I guess, but I really felt ragged. Calls to my sisters in the middle of the night were frequent. "You are doing the right thing," they'd say. "You've done your homework. You'll be fine.

So here we are, one year later, bustling and happy and comfortable in the new space. It has taken a long time for some things (we're just now getting signs for the shop -which should be in very soon) and we'll probably always be tweaking our systems. But we're much happier. There is room in our storage areas. We have space in our walk-in refrigerator to accommodate much more local produce - which makes all of us VERY happy. And there is plenty of room for you to come in, get some of our handmade salads and soups, sit in our sunny cafe, and take a break from the haste of your life.

If you haven't been here in a while, do drop in. If you're from out of town, come for a visit. We're delighted to get to meet you and share some of our light with you.

"Coming to Asheville? Come to Laurey's!"

We hope you do!

Talk to you soon,
Laurey

Local Hero - it's Official!
She's always been our hero, and now the Mountain Xpress has recognized Laurey as the Local Hero for 2014. Yup! ("Zounds!", as Laurey would say.)

This week, I attended the opening of the Asheville Design Studio's new entrance for the YWCA, and the unveiling of the plans for her garden there.
Bees! Basil! Honey! Yum! More to come - go visit their lovely new entrance!

And I meeting-hopped here at Laurey's - what a great idea! We needed to work with two groups, almost simultaneously.  One was originally scheduled for 8:30 am, the other at 10.
The 8:30 pushed ahead to 9.
The 10 am folks asked to be earlier - they had a 10:30 conflict. We decided that some folks could get started at 9:30, and the others would join as they could.

HOW TO HAVE TWO MEETINGS AT ONCE
1. Invite everybody here to Laurey's cafe.
2. Early folks order their breakfast, pick the table, enjoy the lovely cafe morning.
3. On-time folks join the conversation underway, pop up to order breakfast and head back to the table to keep working.
4. Late-comers grab a coffee and a scone on the way in, linger for lunch and the wrap-up!

The second group does the same drill. People who find themselves in both groups hop back and forth - instant sub-committees! (You think I am making this up - that is actually exactly how it happened.)

Rachel Dudasik, hero of the Livestrong Program at the YMCA, led us in a starter meeting for the next JOY!Ride - we are shooting for a fall ride in September of 2015. We will most likely team with a big new local sponsor, and more on that later.  We are going to invite our folks to join the volunteer team for the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club for their Fletcher Flyer next June. (We'll be able to help them along, and get some valuable mentoring on route protocols and all that.)

Bee-Loving Hussy!Pam Seikman of WNCAP invited Deb Roberts, Laurey's bee mentor, to help brainstorm an idea for a bee-oriented item for the WNCAP Raise Your Hand auction.

You can buy your tickets online for this sell-out fundraiser - it will be at the Doubletree on Saturday, October 11.

Deb describes herself as a Bee-Loving Hussy; she travels internationally to promote learning on the world of bees, and is so excited to represent Bee City USA to all our neighbors!

And to really understand how WNCAP works, and why we are in it, you might take a look at our friend Roberta Binder's essay on Pam, in this WNC Woman article.
It's really, really great! - and so is Pam!
Listen to our Critter!
You recall that we now make our home in the deep woods of suburban Weaverville.
(In an iPhone-related typo last week, I typed to a buddy, "I now love in Weaverville..")

Standing at our (new!) kitchen sink one night last week, I heard a cry. It was muffled but, for me, clearly audible over the chatter of our kitchen radio. A child? A cat?

Fred's ear is tuned to clarinets. No help there.
Pop open the front door with me, and hear what I heard: What the heck is that?

Then I heard this: really?

Ever the country girl, I declared: "It sounds like an owl! But really tiny!!" Back to Google, where we heard what you just listened to.

"The tiny Eastern Screech Owl", Fred marveled. Hah!

Is that the same tiny thing that visited Laurey up here last fall? I do believe so!
