The Bike! The Bike!
So here's the story: Laurey joined a group called WomanTours for their Southern Tier ride in March and April of 2009. 3100 miles. Laurey dedicated her ride to focus awareness on ovarian cancer, and raised a whole heap 'o funds ($40,000!) for the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, with a nice assist from her fans, from Jubilee! and the wonderful folks at Mission Hospital. WomanTours Southern Tier 2009
The gals (as our mother would say, "the gals") finished the ride in Saint Augustine, Florida. We feature here photos of our Laurey, windburned, sun-flushed, radiant with joy and success. The Sunday she returned to Asheville, still sporting her 50-day bike tan, she made an appearance in full bike regalia at Jubilee!

You'll perhaps note that many of the photos feature her holding her bike over her head. It is a lovely light thing, this bike, and for whatever reason the gals just grabbed 'em and hoisted 'em at pretty much every opportunity, particularly for photo ops.. Apparently that's what you do when you're excited and you've been riding the thing for weeks.... At any rate, that's what they did. A lot!

Here 'tis, dear friends, the fabulous bike that took fabulous Laurey across this fabulous country in 2009. We are raffling off this Trek 2300 road bike, 100% of the proceeds to benefit the Joy!Ride, the marvelous LiveSTRONG program at our local YMCA.

Tickets at $20, available the day of the ride, this week at Laurey's shop, and other outlets NEAR YOU! email to Heather!

Write to me here at Laurey@laureysyum.com if you'd like to take a chance on this machine and can't get in to the shop or over to the Joy!Ride - we'll work it out via email!

In this issue, I feature photos of the bike, photos of Laurey, and a bit of a WOW!! a LINK to a YouTube video she did to see if she could get on the Ellen deGeneres show(!) and ONE MORE video of her arrival in April in Saint Augustine, whooping it up.

You might want to know the specs for the machine:
Trek 2300 carbon road bike, 50cm size, model year 1999, Rolf Vector wheels, Shimano Ultegra/105 9 speed components. This fits a lady of a certain age who is about 5 feet 5 inches. You get the picture.

(We have one OTHER very special bike of Laurey's, the one she was awarded in October of 2012 at the LiveSTRONG convention. We'll do a charitable auction or raffle of that marvy machine at the very next opportunity...stay tuned!)

Just - Grab - and then - - GO!
Our Dinner-To-Go feature is how this whole newsletter got started.

Laurey wrote out the special dinners for the month, and published a paper newsletter, with a short column of observations about Asheville life.

My friend Jerry at Brunk Auctions told me the other day that HE was the printer for her first written newsletter editions. He maintained the mailing list for her, and mailed out each issue - once a month. His shop was down below Laurey's original shop across the street, now Lola's Salon (and a very nice salon it is, too!). Jerry still drops in to Laurey's for his lunch. Talk about a fan!

When I lived 1,000 miles north of you all**, all of you lucky near-Laurey-living people, I used to read Laurey's Dinner-To-Go listings for the month on paper. That wasn't too rough, just now and then wishing I could try some of these wonderful dishes. So proud of her and her marvelous staff!
May Dinner-To-Go
Then Laurey went electronic, I think 10 years ago, and we could read the specials every week. Every week! Every week, I sat up there and simmered, wishing I could drop in for a bite of Roasted Asparagus, getting peeved that I was missing the Strawberry Spinach Pecan Salad.

...well, now I am here, and have been for some years. I am so delighted, always, grateful really, to be able drop in for the Dinner-To-Go! How 'bout -- tonight!! Any time! How sweet is that?

I'm sure you also know to peek into the Grab and Go - the open case just to your right as you enter the shop.
(Adam says he can't keep it full - YES!)

A whole dinner! A nice casserole! Right there! All ready for you!

Pick up a salad, why dontcha? Fresh and terrific - we know you'll love it.

**When I arrived in Kentucky on my way here in 2006, I learned that the possessive plural of you all is "your all's", as in, "I didn't know which coat was your all's, so I brought these out for you". Hooray for regional America!

Laurey's notes (from a lifetime of writing)
[So much has been written about Laurey and her life projects, but of course the best spokesman is Laurey herself.  In this column we present archival reprints of her messages. This is an early newsletter from her online records.]

June 5, 2004

Let's see. Shall I tell you more about Italy? This dream hovers, comes in and out of focus, and persists.

I have found, and have spoken with, the woman who owns this relic of a property I stumbled into when Monroe and I were in Italy last month. The woman lives in Geneva, Switzerland, and greeted me with a comfortable and curious familiarity when I called last week.

"No," she said, "the property is not ON sale, and, right now, it is not even FOR sale, but don't worry, my dear, because nothing will happen to it without you hearing first. I am open to this idea, the idea of you owning some of my estate. There are complications, but I am open to you."

"I'm not really even in a position to be talking to you about this," I stammered, dollar signs floating in front of my eyes. "I just must tell you that my heart is captivated by this dream. I don't know how it is going to happen, nor if there is any way I could do it, but, well, I just had to find you."

"I'm following a dream too," she said. "Dreams are good."Laurey at Jubilee!

We talked about a few logistics. She related her summer's plans: watching one son race high performance cars on the Grand Prix circuit in Europe, tending to her family home in Portofino (am I in this league, I wonder?) and, finally, in late fall, going to the land in Tuscany.

"Well that's exactly when I plan to be there!" I exclaimed. "There is a conference I am planning to attend, and I want to visit this land again. I will bring the one who shares this dream, and we can talk then."

"Very good," she said. "We'll meet on October 24th, shall we?"

I hung up the phone. Sat on my front step. Looked at my yard, full of day lilies and roses and coreopsis and promise. And drifted to that hillside and that land and that dream and felt, curiously, very content. Absolutely peaceful. And tremendously excited at the very same time.

JOY!Ride in The Laurel
The Laurel!Thank you so much, dear Paul Howey and The Laurel of Asheville, for your lovely article about the Joy!Ride. Here we go - it is a wonderful FEATURE!

The Laurel of Asheville

The Second Annual JOYride in Asheville, benefitting LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, will be held in honor of long-time local activist and community leader Laurey Masterton. Laurey, who passed away from cancer in February, founded the JOYride.

The event will take place beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday May 17, at Carrier Park. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

Laurey’s sister Heather Masterton said, “A huge factor in Laurey’s treatment cycle, her emotional and personal courage and perseverance, was the great gift that she received from LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.”

Individuals and families are encouraged to participate, even if only “InSpirit,” for those not able to ride on the day of the event. There will be food, fun, music, and more to help everyone celebrate the ride and survivors everywhere.
JOY Ride - Saturday, May 17, 2014
Here's a fun thing: Laurey made a VIDEO near the end of her ride in 2009, a note to Ellen deGeneres to see if she could be on her show. Here she is, tan, happy, fit, and we are happy to hear her voice and see her smile, and feel her pride... thank you, Laurey, and thank you, Ellen, for this excuse.

To Ellen, from Laurey!
AND! AND!! Another short video, a cutie-pie shrieking celebration with the massively wonderful Connie O'Connor and Janet Bee, whose support of Laurey now and forever is wildly unmatched! Here are the Golden Girls for real! And of course they are holding their bikes over their heads. Naturally.

The End of the Ride! 2009 WomanTours!

(Just a slightly updated version of) Laurey's JOY!Ride note from last year:

And by now you must have heard of our JOYride for LiveSTRONG at the YMCA.  The ride is Saturday, May 17th.

After the kids get going, the long distance riders will take off.

BUT the fun will just get going at that point.  We will have, among other things:
Games
Face Painting

Snacks
Bike safety obstacle courses (for the kids)
