Love at Laurey's

This lovely little gal showed up when our sister Lucinda and I were reviewing the vast collection of treasure at Laurey's house. (Many many boxes in closets and cabinets - and a remarkable number of them were carefully labelled, "Laurey's Treasures." Seriously.)

Soooo - in the first days following Laurey's passing I was sort of seeking a little sign of her to carry about with me.

One day I was on the phone at her desk, and when I hung up found out that this little bee gal had jumped into my palm.

When Laurey was preparing for her 3100 mile bicycle ride across the United States in 2009, she sought a few small items to carry with her as a sort of amulet.

Lucinda and I found a couple of little glass bees at a craft fair in Kentucky, and for awhile I thought this was the one who had ridden with Laurey.

Turns out there was ANOTHER, very scruffy, smaller bee, who rode with the "holy dirt" from El Sanctuario de Chimayo in New Mexico, world renowned for its healing powers. Laurey had scooped up a small box of the famous dirt, treasured it, and passed it on to Emily and Adam when their son Henry was facing his health challenges.

Emily sent the blessed sand from New Mexico along with Laurey on her bike ride. In the same tiny satin pouch, we found that tiny box.

(Apparently it has been spreading its healing sand around pretty liberally in its travels  - we are down to about 1/2 teaspoon.) We have returned it to Emily.

Lucinda kept the famous scruffy bee, but this pretty little gal is now in my pocket....just there.

We obviously don't need a reminder, but it's nice to feel that she has given me an amulet, too.

Laurey's notes (from a lifetime of writing)
[So much has been written about Laurey and her life projects these past weeks, but of course the best spokesman is Laurey herself.  In this column we present archival reprints of her messages. This is an early newsletter from her online records.]

March 29, 2004

Once again the morning has been full of adventure.  It used to be that the morning walk with Tye, my sweet pup, was a quiet time for me. Contemplative, gentle, and meditative.

Not so these days. It is SPRING and Tye is full of spunk.

Our morning walk takes place next to a duck-filled lake. It has been particularly busy lately, with ducks and geese calling, flirting, honking, complaining and raising all kinds of a ruckus when Tye comes near. This morning a huge goose had crossed the road -  a very busy road! -  to herd two wayward Mallards back to the water. A driver had stopped, right in the middle of the road, watching with concern as the Mallards flirted and ignored the goose. Tye was quite willing to help but I locked her extendable leash which kept her close to me, straining and heaving.

"But I'm SURE I can get them!!!" she implored.

The driver and I discussed the situation. I was about the tie up the pup when the goose prevailed and all three, the goose and the two Mallards, took off, flying across the road back to the safety of the lake. Whew!

Tye, meanwhile, was on high squirrel alert!

What ever happened to the quiet stroll? I wondered.

The squirrel outpost is, of course, across the busy road, so Tye dodges in and out of the guardrails, the trees, the many obstacles in the way of her clear view. I am strong enough, just about, to keep her with me on THIS side of the road. I tug and coax and finally we are past the squirrels and on to the Robins!

And so it goes.

Now, Part II, most Saturdays, is that I get to work, settle in, make coffee, check my e-mail, organize my day, check in with the kitchen gang, and ease into things.

Today, however, there were about 200 people CAMPED outside my shop's front door, all waiting for the box office of The Orange Peel to open so they could buy tickets to the Bob Dylan concert. Tickets are not available on line for this one (how refreshing!) so people have driven from all over the region. What a hoot! There is one fellow, right outside my front door, tucked into a sleeping bag, his snoring mouth the only body part visible. It's like a flash to Woodstock (okay, much more organized and no mud.) But what a way to start the day!

We are not usually open on Saturdays until 10 but I brewed some extra coffee, wrapped up all the cookies I could find, called Karen at home and proposed that she come in and help me. Ten minutes later she was here and the doors are now open. Sleepy travelers are coming in to get coffee and cookies. We have the music tuned to the Folk Rock station. Tye is asleep, and it is time to check my e-mail.

Talk to you next week, man!

Peace!

Laurey

Where are the bees going?

Our friends the bees are beginning to gather their strength for the coming season.

Laurey commemorated their efforts with the sale of amulets filled with 1/12th a teaspoon of honey, the amount of honey that is made by ONE worker bee in her ENTIRE working life!

Now we have two bits of news for you -

1. We still have in stock these amulets, filled with a teensy bit of Laurey's own Stoney Knob Gold honey, made by her own bees in Weaverville, North Carolina.

We have a small supply of these works of art in stock, and our dear friends Joan and Ken Cope will keep us going for a some time into the future. These lovely pieces of jewelry sell here at the shop for $55, a great way to celebrate the return of Spring!

2. Lucinda is embarking on a new adventure: she is going to host Kentucky bees in Laurey's beehives...they will be on a big truck on the way back to Lexington on Sunday afternoon. Wish us luck!

(P.S. Laurey's own bees, like many North Carolinians, suffered some hardship due to the fierce cold of the winter months. They will be accompanying the hives only in spirit).
