Kids at Laurey's
We spotted this charmer getting ready to enjoy her lunch at Laurey's this week.

(Don't you know Laurey would have loved these red ladybug boots!!??)

Our friend Linda spoke to me the other day, talking about her grandchildren's love of Laurey's food and the shop. They are two girls, 4 and 6 years old. The older girl asked if she could go back and see Laurey; her folks gently told her that Laurey wasn't there to speak to.

She looked around at the memorial notes and pictures of my dear sister, then asked quietly, "Is Laurey with God? Did she go to heaven?"

Yes, they said.

"Well," her little sister piped up, "She didn't tell ME!"

....................

You betcha, kids, she didn't tell a lot of us. But she sure thought a lot of the dear folks who bring their families to enjoy the sunshine and the great good-for-you food, day after day. And we sure are glad to see you all here.

Laurey's notes (from a lifetime of writing)
[So much has been written about Laurey and her life projects these past weeks, but of course the best spokesman is Laurey herself.

[We loved hearing our sister's voice, and to our great good fortune, it resounded clearly through multiple channels. In this column we present archival reprints of her messages. This is another of the early newsletters in our online records.]

February, 2004

I'm feeling a little scrunchy this morning.

I stayed up later than usual last night, feeling full of energy and spunk after Monroe and I had our "Delicious Expeditions" evening here in the Garden Room.

Maurie poured four different Tuscan wines and we cooked, ate, laughed, and spent the evening with a very nice bunch of people.

The funny part for me was noticing how nervous I felt before the guests arrived.

You'd think that, by now, I'd get over that. But I was fluttery and jittery and Emily had to grab me and remind me to breathe. I wasn't concerned about the demonstrating and cooking. And I was not worried about the food or the wine. But, I realized when I stopped for a moment right before everyone showed up, I felt wobbly about people coming to spend time in my place.

You know, to this party in my "house". Once again I remembered what it is like to be the hostess, what my clients go through before their guests arrive.
Will they fit?
Will the new dimmers make the lighting work better?
Did we buy the right kind of tables? Chairs?
Will the guests get along with each other?
Will they have fun?
Will they come back?

At this point I'm ALMOST used to the idea of people coming in for lunch. Almost.

After all, only a few months ago the office was far away from the dining area. And the dining area only held 14 crammed-in guests. So it makes sense that the buzz of a full dining room at lunch is still a new sound to me. (But I really, really like it!)

And, as far as parties go, we've had a handful of events here in the Garden Room, so I am getting used to that activity too. Karen, our catering director, is a sculptor in her other life so she brings her artistry to arranging the room in different and interesting and functional and sparkling ways.

It is a nice space for a party. I've seen that. But it IS different when it is your own party. No question about it.

And the reality is, Monroe was here and made the room look cozy and comfortable and, well, Tuscan-like. He figured out a way to hide a slide projector and bounce the images around the room so that the wall filled with pictures of our Tuscan hillsides.

And Maurie was in control of the wine. All I had to do was talk a little. Cook a little. Schmooze a little. No big deal, right?

The guests ate, sipped, talked and, it seems to me, really had a nice time. So what was I worried about?

Still, when I went home the details kept spinning through my head. All good details. The guests did fit. The lighting was very nice. The guests seemed to get along with each other very nicely. They seemed to have fun. And, I think, they would come back without being forced. And on that note - a number of folks asked about when we are going to schedule the next Delicious Expeditions evening. I'd say it is certain we WILL put others on our calendars.

We'd love to do An Evening in Provence. A night of Basque "pintxos" (wonderful, exotic hors d'oeuvres). Stay tuned and we'll let you know.

Bene!

A note from Tye
Laurey's "darling pup" Tye had a SPECTACULAR telephone conversation with our friend Cathy, the Animal Communicator.

(Please note herewith our disclaimer: we have no explanations or rationale for this conversation - just tellin' you all how it happened.)

The photo below is about how she looked during some of the HOUR-LONG conversation. Mostly she just kept her head down on her paws and looked quietly back and forth to Martha and to me, as she and Cathy spoke to each other, silently.

So much to tell, but here's the gist: Tye is looking forward to returning to her routine.

She is almost certainly going to take her place in a loving family who shall be named publicly in this forum at some time in the future. (She knows them well, and they are going to get together with her for hikes and re-acquainting visits over the next weeks.)

We asked her if she knew what had happened to Laurey. "Yes, she is not in her body. She comes and visits me here. She lies down with me."

Tye recalled the visits to the hospice facility, the beautiful Solace at Care Partners. She thanked whoever brought her there (Martha) and said it made her very happy.

Tye said that Laurey liked to go outside in the grass and the flowers, and we should all do that, too. BY THE WAY, Cathy lives away away, in Flat Rock(!) and unbelievably, still does not know which Laurey we are talking about, and at the end, asked us, "Does Laurey have a business? Do lots of people come there?". (YYYYYup!)

Our Cathy has a message for all of us, as there are many of you who have told me that you have had visits in dreams or feel sudden unbidden images of Laurey: She says we can simply talk to her. She is here, here for all of us, though you may recall my picture of her on her bike in a doorway filled with light - "Gotta go! Gotta go!". She is here and there, in our hearts and in the sky, in the marshes, on her red bicycle. Perhaps, as Cathy says, she may move on to do other work, but as we call her to us here, she will come and listen.

What's your favorite?

The Littles
We are visiting our sister in Kentucky this weekend.

Latest late-breaking news: Barney, the barn cat, suddenly decided it was okay for Jones and Bailey, Laurey's great-niece and -nephew, (Laurey called them The Littles) to PET him!

A semi-wild, semi-feral animal, Barney is a tough nut. We suggested that perhaps over the course of a summer, he might allow himself to be petted, if they were very still and let him get used to them s-l-o-w-l-y.

Jones popped out of the hay stall after a few minutes and announced that Barney had rubbed up against him. Shortly afterward came the news that Barney was allowing himself to be petted.

A summer's worth of progress in 15 minutes. Eeps.
