- Take Comfort, Athens
Adam Beauchamp and David Stein continue working toward an early 2014 opening of their new Creature Comforts microbrewery to be located in the old Snow Tire plant in downtown Athens. The building has been gutted and new concrete flooring poured. Tours will be offered five nights a week, with a top capacity of 300. The brewery is shooting for four start-up beers to include a European-style pilsner, IPA, an oaked amber with 25 percent rye malt and a Berliner weisse.

- Owen Samples Fresh Hop Casks in Kent
Last September, Owen Ogletree traveled to the hop-growing region of Kent in the southeast of the UK to experience the Kent Green Hop Festival. Brewers from around the region stoked their cask ales with fresh hops straight from the vines - providing a wealth of floral, herbal character.

- Jopen Comes to Georgia
Michel and Lydian, from the famed Netherlands brewery Jopen, shared some of their delicious beers with The Beer Wench and Owen at Trappeze last week in Athens, GA. When in the Netherlands, make it a point to visit their beautiful brewpub that's housed in an old church in Haarlem, just outside of Amsterdam.

Ask for Jopen beers at your favorite craft beer pubs in Georgia...

Jopen Jacobus RPA - 5.3% alcohol and a generous portion of hops ensure a spicy, dry and full-flavored quaffer with an amber color. Imagine a light version of an IPA with a good dose of rye malt.

Jopen Ongelovige Thomas (Doubting Thomas) is a stronger beer for the more experienced beer lover - both with regard to alcohol content and in the dosage of citrusy American hops (Simcoe, Cascade and Chinook).

To celebrate its second lustrum (five-year period), Jopen introduced Jubeljoop II. Whereas the first Jubeljoop was a blonde beer with dry hopping, the number II is something quite different: a Dutch Extra Stout.

- Oud Beersel Under New Ownership in Belgium
The historic Oud Beersel lambic brewery in the Brussels suburb of Beersel closed shop a few years ago when the aging owner/brewer could no longer carry on. Owen Ogletree, on his trip to Belgium last month, was pleased to discover that Oud Beersel is under new ownership, and business is doing extremely well.

Owner/brewer Gert Christiaens (pictured above) is passionate about keeping the brewery going, and has invested quite a sum in upgrading the place with new barrels, conditioning space and an attractive tasting room and gift shop.

Gert also just hired the son of Owen's good friends, Patrick and Hilde, who run the wonderful Pahilleke bed & breakfast near the Westvleteren Trappist monastery and brewery. Their son, Manu, serves as an assistant brewer and "idea guy" at Oud Beersel. Manu is pictured with his mom Hilde to the above/left.

Watch for the excellent Oud Beersel lambics, along with some new styles, to return to the southeastern area of the USA soon.

- Brewsletter Sponsor
Red Hare
Sticky Stout

Next in the seasonal lineup for Red Hare comes Sticky Stout - a 6.5% ABV oatmeal stout brewed with roasted malts and loads of oats that provide a slick mouthfeel and smooth body.

Red Hare's Elyse Moore adds, "The balance of oats and malt makes Sticky Stout lightly sweet with aromatic hints of chocolate and roasted coffee coming through on the nose and initial taste, followed by a sticky mouthfeel on the end. This brew is lightly hopped with Saaz and Willamette to help balance, but not detract from, the roasted malt character."
