Craft Beer Paradise: Oh, Oregon!

Lovers of craft beer should definitely include a visit to Oregon on their "bucket lists." One of the regions where the American craft beer revolution was born, Oregon offers a diverse canvas of brewpubs and microbreweries, along with enjoyable outdoor activities and breath-taking scenery. Here are just a few of the highlights from Owen Ogletree's recent Oregonian beer excursion...

Most visitors begin their visit to Oregon in Portland, and there is no easier way to experience some of the best beer spots in town than by hopping on the Brewvana bus tour with owner/driver Ashley Rose (pictured above). For a small price, Ashley will drive groups to several Portland craft beer destinations, provide beer education, a taster glass, beer samples, appetizers and even a pretzel necklace. Click here to view the Brewvana tour schedule.

Owen was pleased to learn that the hip and ultra-bohemian Hair of the Dog brewery recently opened a tasting room and food hall next to the brewery locale in Portland. Hair of the Dog cranks out some amazing craft ales and barrel-aged brews conceived from the mind of owner/brewer Alan Sprints (pictured with with Owen Ogletree). From the website: "Hair of the Dog Brewing Company was founded in November of 1993. The first person to purchase our beer was Fred Eckhardt, beer historian, inspiration, and mentor to the brewers. His purchase of Adam took place on August 23, 1994. Hair of the Dog Adam was originally called Adambier after a German beer style that was no longer being produced at the time."

Check out the beer board (above) at Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) in Portland! This amazing brewpub serves up a huge range of intriguing ales and lagers alongside satisfying food selections. There are always one or two ales on cask, and tours of the downstairs brewhouse can be arranged. www.hopworksbeer.com

Located in the pleasant town of Eugene Oregon, Ninkasi Brewing offers brewery tours, samplers, pints, and a fun patio with a fireplace, food wagons and live music. The name comes from the ancient Sumerian goddess of fermentation. Be sure to try the excellent Total Domination IPA, Believer Double Red Ale, Tricerahops Double IPA and Oatis Oatmeal Stout. www.ninkasibrewing.com

Upon arriving in the delightful town of Bend Oregon, head directly to the Deschutes Brewery tasting room and tour. A pioneer in west coast craft beer, Deschutes' growth in the past several years has proven phenomenal. Sip perennial favorites such as Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Inversion IPA, Black Butte Porter and Obsidian Stout. Current special brews include Red Chair NWPA, Jubelale and the extremely limited Fresh Hop Mirror Pond. Pictured above is Aaron Calihan, our energetic buddy who runs the tours and tastings at Deschutes. Be sure to also visit the Deschutes Public House brewpub in Bend for cask ale versions and scrumptious food.

Located in an old cannery on the scenic banks of the Columbia River Gorge in Hood River Oregon, Full Sail Brewing remains a proud, independent craft brewery producing a wide range of Northwest ales and lagers. After an award-winning brewery tour, settle in at the Full Sail pub (photo above) to enjoy wonderful cuisine and pints of Pale Ale, IPA, Amber, Session Lagers and creative seasonals and limited edition beers. Nothing compares to sitting on the deck of the brewery on a clear day with an IPA and a breath-taking gorge view of front of you. To read the full story of Full Sail, click here.

Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom ranks as another must-taste craft beer destination in Hood River. Matt Swihart and Charlie Devereux started the brewpub back in 2007 with the goal of making beer for craft beer fans. Chat with a local, order a mouth-watering thin crust pizza, and sample from an impressive range of house beers that includes Kölsch, IRA, Hop Lava, Vaporizer, This Is Not A Porter, Bocktopus, Devil's Kriek, Rainier Kriek and Chimney Stout.

Owen and The Beer Wench absolutely loved their stay at Seven Oaks Bed & Breakfast in Hood River. Nestled within a quiet spot in a light industrial area just outside of downtown Hood River, Seven Oaks is situated on two acres of tranquil gardens surrounded by mature Douglas Firs that provide privacy and serenity (see photo above). Views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams pop up between the trees on clear days, and the B&B offers a comfortable backyard cabin and lovely rooms in the main house. The owners love Oregon and are friendly, welcoming, and truly interested in their guests. We really enjoyed the vegetarian breakfast. Be sure to stay here when visiting the beer spots in and around Hood River.

For an in-depth guide to Oregon's craft beer scene, pick up a copy of Bob & Debra Ledford's Oregon Brew Tour book. This delightful book focuses on the state's craft beer, microbrews, nanobrews, festivals and homebrew information, and up-close details regarding the owners and history of each location are included. No better guide exists in providing the full picture and feel of Oregon's rich beer culture. What a fun read!

Peak Organic's Maple Oat Ale

Pictured to the right are Rob Lucente (left) and brewer Jon Cadoux at the Peak Organic brewery in Portland Maine showing off their 2011 shipment of fresh, organic hops grown at a small farm nearby. These guys have a great deal of fun being creative with their flavorful, personable brews.

Be sure to check out Peak's current fall seasonal version of their popular Maple Oat Ale --

From the guys at Peak Organic...

Peak Maple Collaboration is a truly local project. It’s a new twist on our previously brewed Maple Oat Ale. We worked with local farmers and small businesses to craft this beer with Maine-grown organic oats from GrandyOats and Vermont-produced organic maple syrup from Butternut Mountain Farms. The Maple Collaboration is a copper-colored brew with a dynamic mouth feel from the organic oats and a subtle richness in the finish from the organic maple syrup. The beer is in support of Chefs Collaborative, the nation’s leading environmentally conscious culinary organization.

ABV: 6.7% IBUs: 26

SUGGESTED FOOD PAIRING: Meats with sweet marinade, salmon, bratwurst, chicken, mild English cheeses.

Everyone Loves a Free Spirit

Free Spirit Farmhouse-style Ale is a very special collaboration between Terrapin and Heavy Seas to commemorate Brittney Fox Watts, a member of both brewery families. Brittney was lost to us, but her spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of all the people she touched. This delicious ale embodies many of the things Brittney loved about life, beer and friends.

Malt:  2-row, Munich, wheat, rye, acidulated malt and sunflower seeds.

Hops: US Goldings, Mount Hood / ABV: 7.2%
